About Kenny

I started tutoring in high school, pretending to do work during class when in fact, my work was already done and I was helping my classmates who were having trouble with theirs. As a college student, I worked as a tutor in Trigonometry, Physics, History, and Economics, frequently working with students who had recently entered this country and were experiencing difficulty in the language aspect of their subjects, not necessarily the core concepts themselves. For me, the biggest reward is seeing a student progress in a subject area and turn what was once a weakness into a strength.

I understood the concepts of algebra at an early age. In elementary school you are given a problem 7+___=10. This is algebra but students aren't told it is. Years later in pre-algebra, the same problem is given, except it is written 7+n=10, which confuses some students because they see a letter and ask why, so it must be explained that the letter represents a number, whose value is unknown. If I have a student who is struggling in algebra, I use this equation (or one similar to it) as a baseline test for the student's level of understanding of the concepts of algebra.

Growing up in a bilingual household (Spanish, English) helps a lot, but it was nurtured by my parents. As the second of four children, we spoke Spanish with our parents (and my father's family), and English among ourselves and with most friends. Entering high school, I was encouraged to take Spanish in order to hone my writing skills. I reached Spanish AP and got a 5 on the AP exam. The high school I (and some of this nation's founding fathers) attended went from grades 7 thru 12 and Latin was a 5-year requirement. It was easy to understand, given my background in Spanish, which allowed me to focus on the structure of the language and some of the smaller subtleties. By the time I graduated, I noticed my vocabulary expand in both my principal languages.
I also studied Hebrew at my local synagogue and am capable of reading other Cyrillic-based languages, such as Russian and Greek.

After receiving my degree, I spent the next 6+ years in industrial manufacturing, working on products such as baghouse controllers, touchscreen displays, slot machines (yes, the ones that are in Las Vegas), and dermatological devices. I am eager to share my knowledge and experiences and to enrich the next generation of engineers, writers, doctors, and leaders.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
