About Nicholas

One of my greatest passions is helping others become as excited about science as I am. I know that hard work and perseverance result in outstanding grades and test scores. I know firsthand that some one-on-one time can make anyone a fantastic student. In addition to my over 100 hours of one-on-one tutoring experience, I was a graduate teaching associate for biostatistics at San Diego State University for three years. During that time, I received consistently high praise from both my students and my supervisors, which resulted in the biology department awarding me Outstanding TA of the Year in 2014. I enjoy helping students achieve their academic goals and cannot wait to help you achieve yours!

I have three years of experience teaching college-level biostatistics. This not only includes the theory behind statistics but also how to run various statistical tests. I specialize in tests relevant to biology, including t-tests, chi-square, ANOVAs, regression, and many more! I not only focus on the mathematical calculations for each individual test but also why each test is used and the basic logic of hypothesis testing. Finally, I have expertise in using statistical computer programs, especially SYSTAT, SPSS, Excel, and JMP.

I received my Master's in Biology with a concentration in Marine Ecology in Fall 2015. This indicates not only my broad knowledge in many scientific disciplines but also detailed knowledge in biology, ecology, and zoology. I am also proficient in high-level scientific writing and reading as well. I have written two theses of original research and I have a published manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal. I currently work as a contractor in an aquatic toxicology lab doing environmental monitoring, which utilizes my knowledge of biology, ecology, statistics, chemistry, and much more!

I look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I have extensive experience in scientific research and I have two degrees in scientific fields, BS in Marine Biology and MS in Biology. In both of degrees, I took rigorous classes and maintained a high GPA (>3.7). Finally, I achieved a 5 on the AP Biology Test and I tutored students in AP Biology.

Chemistry

I have taken several chemistry courses as part of my degrees (BS and MS) in Biology. In addition, I took Honors General Chemistry, which makes me particularly strong in general chemistry. Finally, as part of my aquatic toxicology position, I frequently use skills from general chemistry to make dilutions and chemical solutions accurately.

Ecology

I have extensive experience in scientific research and I have two degrees in scientific fields, BS in Marine Biology and MS in Biology. In both of degrees, I took rigorous classes and maintained a high GPA (>3.7). My focus in my master's program was Ecology.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel extensively in my academic career. This not only includes using it for basic data imputation, but also using it to create tables, data sheets, and running many different formulas on the data. I am also well versed in using Macros in Excel and running several statistical procedures.

SPSS

I am familiar will SPSS type statistical programs (another example is SYSTAT). These are the stats programs I have used most commonly when completing my Masters degree. I also taught a biostats lab at SDSU where we used SYSTAT (once again, a very similar program to SPSS), so I am very comfortable teaching students to both understand that statistics in these programs as well as using the programs to get the right tests done.

Zoology

I have extensive experience in scientific research and I have two degrees in scientific fields, BS in Marine Biology and MS in Biology. In both of degrees, I took rigorous classes and maintained a high GPA (>3.7). My undergraduate thesis project involved identifying all the invertebrates I dredged during my experiment (animals across all invertebrate phyla) to as specific of a level as I could. I also took a rigorous invertebrate zoology course where we explored, dissected, and drew the anatomy of animals in all invertebrate taxa.

Knowledgeable tutor

Nicholas was able to explain several chemistry concepts to my son that he had trouble grasping in class. We would like to continue working him during the school year
