About Matthew

After competing in national math tournaments in high school and taking BC Calculus in the 10th grade, I enrolled at Harvard College where I graduated in four years with both bachelor's and master's degrees in Applied Math with a focus in economics.

I subsequently studied at Georgia Tech's business school where I received a master's degree in strategic management.

I currently work in San Diego as a financial analyst. My focus when tutoring is on helping students learn by doing, not by watching, so I have students work through problems and help them along.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I was state math champion in high school.

Business

I studied for a PhD in Strategic Management at Georgia Tech, leaving with a masters of science. I also worked as a research assistant for a professor at Harvard Business School. I have worked as an equity research analyst at the world's largest hedge fund. I've also done business development for two startup companies.

Calculus

I took BC Calculus as a sophomore in high school and scored a 5 on the AP exam.

Economics

I majored in Applied Math with a focus on Economics at Harvard, where I received both bachelor's and master's degrees.

GMAT

I scored in the 96th percentile on the GRE verbal and had a perfect score on the math when I applied the PhD programs at business schools. I have scored perfect on practice GMAT exams and have helped dozens of students prepare for the GMAT. I have a custom curriculum for GMAT prep including a list of topics, overview of the exam, and study plans.

GRE

690 verbal, 800 math, 5.0 analytical writing

Linear Algebra

I have bachelors and masters degrees in applied math from Harvard University. While there I took two semesters of theoretical linear algebra where I earned A- and B+ in the course.

Extremely Knowledgeable

Matthew was great on our first lesson. He knows the statistics material so well. He's like a stats walking book. He explained things throughly and he had a positive attitude.
