About Bryce

I am a certified teacher who happens to thrive more in the one on one environment of tutoring than in the larger classroom setting. I have extensive experience tutoring students of all ages and at many different levels of mathematics, from late elementary and middle school through to college mathematics. I am a compassionate individual who, through my education training, has learned how to deliver content to learners with different needs. I work well with parents and students to shape my time with the student for maximum benefit to the student. It is quite important to me that there is open communication between the parents, the student, and myself so that we are on the same page and can give the student the best support possible. I always endeavor to tailor my approach to the needs of my student, and so like to have a dialogue with the parents reporting my observations and learning the relevant parts of the student's learning history so that we can succeed.

Throughout my undergraduate years, I tutored in various venues. I worked with families of high schoolers and helped college students at USD. Currently, I work in a math lab at a community college, tutoring and record keeping. All of this has given me experience in a vast variety of subjects, from prealgebra through calculus. I have tutored higher subjects on occasion. In the math lab, I am the statistics specialist, and have helped many students succeed in the subject. My most successful student teaching experience was with sixth graders, but through the sum total experience of my education training and my work in the tutoring center at USD as well as other tutoring experiences, I came to realize that I am highly skilled at conveying content, but managing a large classroom full of students is not my forte. I have also found that I have built the most meaningful connections with students in one on one or small group settings where I have more opportunity to get to know my students and relate to them. In delivering content, I make great effort to maximize relatability for my students. That is to say, I shape the material I give the students so that I am delivering the concepts in such a way that the students can engage with it on a level they are comfortable with. For example, I will construct problem sets based on my students' lives where I tease out the math concepts from everyday situations, such as shopping or going to a restaurant. In this way, students see where math applies to their lives, and they invest in the material because they find themselves in the problem.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have a degree in math, and passed my ACT's well, particularly the math section. I have worked with students previously to prepare them for standardized tests and know how to guide students to success. My education training prepared me for working with standardized tests and teaching techniques for success on these tests.

Algebra 1

My current employment in a math lab has me primarily tutoring this subject and so I am well versed in working with this subject. I have learned how to aid students in understanding the concepts in algebra and have developed many different approaches to the material based on differing student needs. It is important to me to tailor my techniques to student needs to maximize student potential and success.

Algebra 2

As with Algebra 1, I currently work in a Math Lab tutoring this subject and am particularly strong in this subject. Most of the students I see in the lab are in this subject. I have gained a lot of experience working with this subject.

American History

I have always been very interested in history and have done quite well in American History courses. During my education training, I created a curriculum package, as a class project, centered around the Lewis and Clark expedition and had to use and expand my knowledge of US History to do so. I have a good working knowledge of a lot of US History and can help with it.

Calculus

This is another frequently tutored subject in my Math Lab, and I got A's and B's in my calculus classes in my undergraduate classes. I also have a degree in math. My undergraduate degree is in Math and I am pursuing a Master's in Math at this time.

Geometry

This is another frequently tutored subject in the lab. I have also gained a lot of experience in this subject through my work in the lab, and also learned good techniques in my Education training. l am good at adapting my techniques with this subject to individual learners.

Prealgebra

I have worked with students at this level extensively both in my current position at the community college and in private tutoring settings. I also student taught 6th graders in this subject. I still have much of the material I developed for those students and can adapt it forward to new students and support students in this subject quite well.

Precalculus

This is another frequently tutored subject in the math lab. I have learned many great techniques to aid students in understanding the nuances of this subject and prepare them to study calculus. This is an important stepping stone into the more difficult subjects in mathematics.

Probability

Along with statistics, this is my specialty in the math lab. I have guided students to great success in this subject as well as statistics. I have developed a wealth of approaches and techniques to illuminate the nuances and difficult bits of this subject to make them accessible to students.

SAT Math

I have a degree in math, and passed my SAT's well, particularly the math section. I have worked with students previously to prepare them for standardized tests and know how to guide students to success. My education training prepared me for working with standardized tests and teaching techniques for success on these tests.

Along with probability, this is my specialty in the math lab. I have guided students to great success in this subject as well as statistics. I have developed a wealth of approaches and techniques to illuminate the nuances and difficult bits of this subject to make them accessible to students.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is among the most frequently tutored subjects in the math lab, and is one I am particularly strong in. Throughout my degree studies, trigonometry was involved and so I have honed my skills in it. I have also learned many good techniques for teaching in through my work in the lab.
