About Olive

Trained to be a professional ESL teacher, I am always concerned about the best way to teach a second language. After getting my B.A degree of English Education, I began my teaching career by working in an adult English learning center. Years' of teaching experience did not stop my pursuing in this area. I ended up with more questions and the urgency to learn more. I took half a year off to prepare for enrolling in a master degree in the US. Now I gained my master degree in TESOL from the University of San Diego.

The past two years were an incredible learning experience for me. It was a perfect mixture of theory and practice which definitely helped lift my professional level in ESL area. I learned the theories in Second Language Acquisition systematically and observed various adult learning settings here in San Diego such as English Language Academy (ELA), Miramar College, San Diego City College, and San Diego Continuing Education.

All those helped me to know my students' needs better and encouraged me to think about ways to boost their interest and fulfill their personal needs. I always believed in one-on-one teaching, where a teacher's complete focus is only on one student. The individualized teaching is the most productive one according to my teaching experience.

Coming from a non-English speaking country myself, I had the same feeling of anxiety when encountering with a new language. But I also know to build a mutual trust relationship in teaching can overcome such anxiety. Academic learning will be another obstacle for most non-English speakers. Passing TOEFL test is just the beginning. Academic reading and writing will be an essential part of your university or graduate life.I have learned lots of tips from expert teachers from my professors and excellent teacher friends. We can work together to turn obstacles into miracles.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I am a native Chinese speaker.
I am a language major and experienced language teacher.

I had taught in a Chinese immersion language program in an elementary school for a year and knew how specific the language was taught in a curriculum-based way.

Besides the teaching, I also tutored a couple of students ranging from children to adults. I had conversational classes with them to their specific needs. I like to teach in an interactive way where communication is what I care most.
