About Barbara

In short, I have years of experience teaching, and I'm well versed in visual art, theatre and fashion. I am a confident writer. If your daughter or son seeks a tutor for any of these areas, I would be happy to help out.

During my college career, I started out as a graphic design major, but later switched to STUDIO ART when I transferred to an East Coast school. I attended Marymount Manhattan College in New York City and graduated with a BA in studio art. My senior show was a collection of intaglio and collagraph prints. After graduation, I joined a printmaking group at Teacher's College - Columbia University and continued oil painting on my own. I have shown and sold artwork during my stay in New York and have done so after I moved home to San Diego.

Ironically, it was after returning home that I got jobs in theatre and art education, and fashion design. I worked as an Education Assistant and then Co-Director of Education at San Diego REP Theatre before teaching art to elementary school students in Chula Vista, mostly at Discovery Charter School. The other arts teachers and myself formed an after-school drama club where I was in charge of the sets, props and costumes and the run crew during performances. It was during this time that I started sewing again and yearned to go back to school myself. I started taking fashion design classes at San Diego Mesa College and have since started my own fashion business. I design women's clothing and accessories, and have brought a jewelry designer on board. We sell in both Simply Local stores in San Diego. I am also on the Fashion Advisory Board at San Diego Mesa College.

To be fair for both parties, I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, and would be open to make-up sessions. Thank you for your interest and I look forward to contributing to your families' success.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

My BA is in studio art in which I attended many class hours drawing and painting. I taught visual art to elementary school students for more than six years. In my lessons, we covered drawing from a still-life and designing a CD cover. I taught an in-depth class on creating a comic strip to the sixth graders.

English

In high school, I attended advanced English classes and passed tests granting me college credits in English. I graduated Marymount Manhattan College in 1993 and have worked various jobs where my English language skills have been valued, including director of education for a not-for-profit theatre here in San Diego.

Painting

My BA is in studio art in which I attended many class hours drawing and painting. I taught visual art to elementary school students for more than six years. In my lessons, we covered drawing from a still-life and designing a CD cover. I have sold my paintings to clients in New York City and elsewhere.

Reading

I'm a confident writer and speaker and did well in English all through my scholastic career. In my personal life, I write a blog and reviews for an online retail review site. What helps me is to continue reading and playing word games.

Theater

I worked for San Diego REP Theatre as an Education Assistant and then as Co-Director of Education. I co-founded and was responsible for sets, props and costumes at Discovery Elementary School in Chula Vista, CA. I have been ensemble, stage manager, run crew, and rehearsal assistant for several theatre companies in San Diego.

Writing

I passed AP English in high school and tested out of two classes in college. I am a confident writer and speaker.
