About Jacob

I'm a solid tutor with an advanced education and around ten years of experience tutoring and teaching. Many of my previous clients have called me the best tutor they ever had. I hope you'll agree.

I have helped students in a number of challenging subjects, including Math, Statistics, Computer Science, and Psychology. I have experience and practice tutoring these subjects at many levels, from the most basic level (classes like pre-algebra), to the college level, and everything in between. Even occasionally the graduate level. Whatever class you're taking, chances are good I've tutored that class before -- possibly many times. You can expect I will be very familiar with the material and the learning process. I've probably worked alongside students just like you before, and seen them succeed.

Math anxiety? I've dealt with that before, and I can help walk you through it. Fallen behind, and struggling to catch up? I can help with that too. Are you an ambitious student who wants to reach an even higher level of achievement? That's great, and I can help you with that.

I've been commended for my patience, and for my ability to balance the help I give -- giving just the right amount of guidance -- not too little, and not too much. I'll make sure that, by the time our session is over, you've actually learned the material, and can do it on your own when tested. I know multiple ways of teaching the same material, and can adapt to your leaning style. If you're having trouble learning the material one way, I can find a way that works better for you.

I have a Bachelor's in Cognitive Science from UCSD, with a specialty in Computation, and a minor in Math. I also have a Master's in Psychology from UCSD. I have published research on Psychology and applied Statistics. I have programmed computers professionally. I have ten years or so of experience in education, working as a tutor or teaching assistant.

I've been employed by Community Colleges (like MiraCosta) and Senior Colleges (UCSD). I've also tutored privately -- many hundreds of hours through the WyzAnt system, and many more outside of WyzAnt. I have a wealth of experience with young adult and older adult students. Some were studying advanced college-level classes, while some were re-learning basic material that they had probably learned while young, but had long-since forgotten. From this experience, I've had every every aspect of this classwork drilled into my head, and learned the best methods of drilling it into a student's head. I've gained experience with students from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I've worked with students with learning disabilities, as well as gifted students. Though I've most often worked with adults, I'm also comfortable working with teenagers and children. My private clients have included adult students, as well as high school and middle school students.

I offer you my help. Find out what you can achieve. You won't be disappointed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

This is a class in which students are introduced to the basic concepts of Algebra -- linear and quadratic expressions, factoring, graphing functions, and so on. I have a lot of professional experience tutoring this subject. For many years, I worked at a math tutoring center, and I was commonly asked for help with classes in the Algebra sequence. I also have a Minor in Math from UCSD. I am very confident in this material, and comfortable offering my services as a tutor.

Algebra 2

This class expands on the basic material taught in Algebra I, often including systems of equations, imaginary and complex numbers, exponential and logarithmic functions, radicals, matrices, and so on. I have a lot of professional experience tutoring this subject. For many years, I worked at a math tutoring center, and I was commonly asked for help with classes in the Algebra sequence. I also have a Minor in Math from UCSD. I am very confident in this material, and comfortable offering my services as a tutor.

C++

C++ is the first programming language I ever used, at about age 12. My B.S. degree is in Cognitive Science, with a specialty in Computation. I completed most of the coursework for a Minor in Computer Science. In 2002-2004, I tutored computer programming classes at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. These classes were taught with C++. I have written programs in C++ in my free time. I also have experience programming in other languages such as Java and MATLAB, both professionally and as a hobby. I have tutored or acted as a teaching assistant for courses in many languages, including C++. I have helped students with their C++ code in my private tutoring practice. Computer programming (in C++ and other languages) is a subject I am commonly asked about through WyzAnt, and I am highly experienced helping students learn this skill.

Calculus

I have a lot of professional experience tutoring this subject. For many years, I worked at a math tutoring center, and I was commonly asked for help with all classes in the Calculus sequence. I have become very well versed in this material, and experienced tutoring it. I can tutor all levels of Calculus, from the basics like integrals and derivatives, through more complex subjects like related rates, line and path integrals, and even vector calculus, with partial derivatives, Green's theorem, Stokes' Theorem, and so on.

Computer Programming

My B.S. degree is in Cognitive Science, with a specialty in Computation. I also completed most of the coursework for a Minor in Computer Science. I have programmed computers professionally in the past, and also as a hobby. At colleges, I have professionally tutored classes in computer programming in C++, and acted as a teaching assistant for a graduate-level class in MATLAB. In my private tutoring practice, I commonly help students with Java, MATLAB, and C++ programming. In fact, computer programming is one of the most common subjects I tutor through WyzAnt. My past clients seem to be happy with their results.

Computer Science

My B.S. degree is in Cognitive Science, with a specialty in Computation. I also completed most of the coursework for a Minor in Computer Science. This included classes in assembler language, data structures, and discrete math. I have programmed computers professionally in the past, and also as a hobby. I have been employed by colleges to tutor computer programming in C++, and acted as a teaching assistant for a graduate-level class in MATLAB. Through WyzAnt, I am very frequently asked to help students with Java, MATLAB, and C++ programming. My past clients seem to be happy with my tutoring in these areas.

Discrete Math

I have privately tutored Discrete Math in the past. I took a course in Discrete Math as an undergraduate at UCSD.

DOS

I've used the DOS operating system extensively. I'm familiar with its basic features, as well as more advanced features such as .bat scripting.

General Computer

I am a "computer person". I've written computer programs professionally and for fun. I've also assembled and repaired computer hardware (mainly my own, but occasionally others' for pay). I know how to work with a computer network and connect a computer to the Internet or a local network. I sometimes help friends troubleshoot network problems. I'm familiar with a lot of computer software, including (but not limited to) commonly-used "office" programs.

Geometry

A class that is often easy for students who are natural visual thinkers, and harder for those who are not. I have a lot of professional experience tutoring this subject. For many years, I worked at a math tutoring center, and I was commonly asked for help with Geometry and related subjects. I also have a Minor in Math from UCSD. I am very confident in this material, and comfortable offering my services as a tutor.

HTML

I've built and maintained several web sites over the years. In fact, in my teens, one of my first sources of income was ad revenue I earned from a web site I coded myself. I'm very comfortable with HTML and web programming.

Java

My B.S. degree is in Cognitive Science, with a specialty in Computation. I also completed most of the coursework for a Minor in Computer Science. Many of my programming classes were taught using Java. I have programmed computers professionally in the past, and also as a hobby. Many of my personal projects have been written in Java. At universities, I have been employed to tutor computer programming in various languages. I tutored classes in computer programming in C++, and acted as a teaching assistant for a graduate-level class in MATLAB. Through WyzAnt, I am frequently asked for help with computer programming, often in the Java language. I fact, Java is one of the more common subjects I tutor. My past clients seem happy with the help I've given them.

Linear Algebra

I've not only taken the class in Linear Algebra, but also tutored it for many years (2004-2010) while working as a tutor at MiraCosta College. I've also used Linear Algebra in practical application, in research I conducted at UCSD, and in personal and professional computer programming projects.

Logic

As an undergraduate, I took multiple classes, in the Computer Science and Math departments, that covered formal logic. I'm somewhat personally interested in the history and philosophy of logic, and have read books on the subject.

MATLAB

I used MATLAB extensively while studying Psychology and Cognitive Science at the graduate and undergraduate levels. I used it to write computer programs for psychological experiments, and also to analyze data collected from those experiments. I was considered one of the better MATLAB programmers in the department. I once acted as a TA for a graduate-level class in MATLAB. I have also written programs for MATLAB in my free time. I have frequently tutored MATLAB and other programming languages, such as Java and C++. Through WyzAnt, I am frequently asked for help with MATLAB. MATLAB is one of the subjects I most commonly tutor. My past clients seem to be very satisfied with my performance.

Microsoft Windows

I have used the Windows operating system extensively, beginning with Windows 95, and up to the latest version. I'm familiar and comfortable with all the basic features of this operating system, and also with advanced topics, like the registry, environmental variables, manual configuration of software drivers, and so on.

Prealgebra

I worked at a math tutoring center for many years, at MiraCosta Community College, and though I worked with adult students, I was not infrequently asked for help with early or remedial math, including the Prealgebra course. Students who asked for help with this material were often adults who had been in the working world, and had not seen a math class in years, and so had forgotten their basic skills. Sometimes, they were individuals with severe math anxiety, or a learning disability, who struggled to learn this material in the first place. In any case, I've tutored math at this level. I would be comfortable working with a child or an adult on pre-algebra math. As far as my formal education: I Minored in Math in college.

Precalculus

A class that lays the groundwork for understanding Calculus. Some students find this class more difficult than Calculus itself -- especially if they never fully mastered Algebra and or Trigonometry. I have a lot of professional experience tutoring this subject. For many years, I worked at a math tutoring center, and I was commonly asked for help with this class. I also have a Minor in Math from UCSD. I am very confident in this material, and comfortable offering my services as a tutor.

Probability

I consider Probability one of my strongest mathematical subjects. I have taken college and graduate-level classes centered on probability theory. I have even authored scholarly papers related to practical applications of probability and statistics. My B.S. degree is in Cognitive Science, with a specialty in Computation, and a Minor in Math. My Master's is in Psychology, and while earning that degree, I worked in a lab that focused on using probability theory to model human perception and behavior.

Psychology

I have a Master's in Psychology from UC San Diego -- a top ranked school for experimental and cognitive psychology. My research focused on sensation and perception, but I am educated in all areas of Psychology. I acted as a TA for undergraduate classes in Psychology, and also the related field of Cognitive Science. I gave lectures, and also offered one-on-one help during my office hours.

Statistics

I consider Statistics one of my strongest subjects, and am very experienced as a tutor in this subject. I worked at a tutoring center in college and post-college, where I regularly helped with this material. In graduate school, I was as a TA for undergraduate classes in Statistics, giving lectures and offering one-on-one help during my office hours. I also regularly tutor Statistics privately. This subject is one of the most common subjects I'm asked to tutor through WyzAnt. I have taken many college and graduate-level Statistics classes, and I have even authored scholarly papers describing applications of statistical and probability theory. In short, I have advanced knowledge of the subject, but importantly, I also have plenty of experience tutoring the basics for students who haven't yet or don't plan to take more than just the introductory course.

Trigonometry

A subject all about circles and angles. For many students, this will be the first class in which they encounter problems that are more like "puzzles", with no single obvious path to a solution. Proving trigonometric identities, for instance, is more an art than a science. I have a lot of professional experience tutoring this subject. For many years, I worked at a math tutoring center, and I was commonly asked for help with Trigonometry. I have gotten very good at guiding students gently, and helping them achieve the experience and confidence they need to solve these problems independently.

Great tutor! Goes the extra mile!

I was struggling in my Behavioral Health Statistics course when I made the decision to contact Jacob. With Jacobs help, I was able to earn on A on my Final, and a B in the course. This was after i had very little hope of passing the course entirely. Jacob was always on time for our sessions, was flexible, and made sure to go that extra mile (booking 2 hour sessions on short notice) leading up to,
