Hello, my name is Hayley. I have a multiple subject teaching credential (K-6) and currently teach a 5/6 combination class at a public school. The subjects I specialize in are: reading (fluency and comprehension), writing, and K-6 common core math.
I have a passion for teaching students how to use reading techniques and learn study skills, while connecting the material with examples to the world around us. Having worked with a very diverse population of students, I gauge what works for specific students directly. When a student is impaired by a certain skill, I address that area of concern and adjust lessons to suit their individual learning style. I look forward to helping your student gain confidence and love learning! Hello, my name is Hayley. Hayley has been an amazing tutor for my spirited 8 year old son! My son is in the second grade and at the beginning of the school year it became clear that he was struggling academically. He struggled with reading comprehension, reading confidence, common core math, working independently and stamina and endurance on homework. We were so lucky that we found Hayley - she has far exceeded my expectations of what a tutor would be able to accomplish with my son. In addition to building excellent rapport with him - we have seen marked improvements in all subject matter areas that she has worked with him on. My son actually looks forward to his time with her and she puts a great deal of thought and effort into lesson plans for him and is able to keep him interested and engaged. She has a high level of commitment and was even willing to attend a conference with his teacher at school in addition to brainstorming strategies to help him improve. Through Hayley's guidance and attention my son's confidence and abilities have increased significantly. She is patient, creative, always on time, flexible, kind and easy to contact via phone and emails. She is at ease with children and is friendly and flexible while still being firm and structured. I truly could not have asked for a better tutor for my son.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a multiple subject teaching credential (K-6). I am currently employed as an English Language Development teacher in a variety of settings (Spanish speakers, mainstream, Kindergarten phonics, etc). I have substituted for grades K-6 for over a year and gained experience in all grades. I was also a long term substitute for 2nd and 5th grade. I enjoy teaching all grades because all students deserve a quality education!
I have a multiple subject teaching credential (K-6). I have substituted for grades K-6 and had long term substitute positions in second and fifth grade classrooms. I am trained in Common Core math.
Math is its own language; it contains specific vocabulary and key words which help us to understand the question or concept at hand. I can help your student use context clues within questions, make math specific vocabulary cards to better understand the material. I will also teach addition/subtraction techniques and practice math facts at the beginning of each lesson. I will find your child's area of need and improve that before moving forward.
Grammar is one of my strongest academic subjects. I encourage students to read (novels) and to practice speaking properly to get familiar with the "rules" of the English language.
I currently teach an English Language Development class for students who are struggling with sentence structure. I use sentence frames, charts (flashcards in a tutoring setting), and choral response to get students familiar with the part of speech or skill at hand. I also have students write the "objective" or standard we are learning during every lesson and review previous material.
I am currently an English Language development teacher. Last year I was a team teacher in a Kindergarten classroom and taught printing. I have also substituted for grades K-6, including a long term substitute job in a second grade classroom where students learned cursive.
I believe repetition is critical and will assign extra practice in addition to your child's sessions. I am an advocate of keeping a journal to reflect on the day and making writing fun!
I am an ELD teacher and a former volunteer reading tutor. I know how to assess specific reading skills (blending, phonics, fluency, automaticity, comprehension, etc) and how to progress monitor for improvement. I have a variety of resources and lesson plans which I have used in my career. I look forward to "cracking the code" and making reading fun!
I took AP Spanish courses all through high school and passed the AP exam. I continued my Spanish studies in college, making it my concentration. I also spent a month in Spain speaking only Spanish. I take monthly trips to an orphanage in Tijuana and speak Spanish with the children there.
I use Spanish now when teaching my class (grades 4-6) of Spanish speaking students who have very limited English because they have lived in the United States for less than a year.
**I will help your student use context clues to figure out how to conjugate verbs in the appropriate tense. I will also use pictures and scenarios to practice vocabulary and common phrases. Flashcards will be used during sessions and given for practice.
I encourage students to use context clues to figure out the meaning of words; reading for comprehension is critical! I also employ the use of flashcards to practice new words. When taking tests, I help students use test taking skills such as process of elimination and using the root word to find the correct answer.
