I am a former News, Weather and Sports personality who redirected my talents into the Hospitality Industry. Since 2004 I have also served as an instructor in the Extended Studies departments at California State University San Marcos and San Diego State University. My teaching style is relaxed and fun but I strive for success with every student I come in contact with.
I have enjoyed directing live events around the globe and working with corporate groups and production staffs of every size. Through my association with Meeting Professionals International, I honed my presentation skills while still maintaining a presence in the classroom as industry-related instructor. I provide a hands-on approach to teaching the subjects I know best: Public Speaking, Corporate Communications and Creative Writing. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a working professional for over 30 years in areas of Broadcast Journalism, Corporate Video & Film Production, Meetings & Events Planning and Education I have help hundreds of friends, colleagues and students in their career development. I focus on goal setting and emphasize the S.M.A.R.T. methodology (Specific / Measurable / Achievable / Relevant / Time-bound). I also coach students in basic presentation skills and effective resume building.
I played as a Defensive Back, Safety and Defensive End at St. Augustine High School in San Diego, CA (1979-1981) and I was recruited to play Defensive Back at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. I returned to St. Augustine in 1989 and served as an assistant coach until 1996. I have been a youth rugby coach since then, and I have gone on to start multiple programs in the San Diego area. I am a huge proponent of the new "Heads Up" program started by the National Football League, and I take safety as the number one concern.
I am currently a Professional Benefit Auctioneer, Voice Over Talent, Public Speaker, Master of Ceremonies and Public Address Announcer. I began my career as a news, sports and weather caster for NBC and CBS affiliates in Arizona. I am also an "Accomplished Toastmaster" and I have been teaching for nearly a decade at San Diego State University. I am trained in all the tactics of basic Public Speaking and I use the latest technology to enhance the learning process.
I studied audio and video production as part of my communications major in college. Upon graduation in 1985, I pursued a career in television and worked for both NBC and CBS affiliates in Arizona. From 1991 to 1998, I owed my own company specializing in corporate and commercial video and film. I have produced and directed hundred of video programs, and I am proficient in aspects of sound design, lighting design, video composition and editing. I currently teach in the Extended Studies Department at San Diego State University.
