About Scott

Hi everyone. I'm Scott and I look forward to helping with your tutoring needs! I offer a diverse mix of personal and professional experience as a tutor and trainer. I have experience tutoring students ranging from grade school age to adult, am adept at individual, small group, and classroom style instruction, and have enjoyed opportunities to tutor students from around the world.

I have tutored individual grade school students in the basics of PC hardware, software and operating systems, provided one-on-one and classroom sessions for adults to improve their mastery of Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook and Word, and conducted small group training sessions for youth and adult model railroad club members to learn digital command control (DCC) software for model trains. While in college I served as an English tutor for students from Japan, China, India and Afghanistan who were preparing to take the TOEFL exam, or who simply wanted to improve their grammar, spelling and reading comprehension skills. I also have an extensive background in public speaking as the past president of a Toastmasters club. This club allowed its members to become significantly more confident and proficient in their presentation skills, and also taught active listening for speech evaluation.

Professionally, I am an engineer for a San Diego software company where I provide individual and group training on Windows software to corporate technical support staff. Academically, I have a BA in International Relations from UC Davis. Through that curriculum, I developed a passion for, and broad knowledge of history, political science, geography, economics, and sociology.

I work a Monday through Friday day job, which allows me to be available most weekends, or most weekday evenings except Tuesdays. I look forward to creating tutoring sessions to meet your specific goals, and hope I can impart some of my experience and enthusiasm for learning to make it fun!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have over 20 years experience as an information technology professional. My earliest experience with computers was with the first model IBM PC in the early 1980's, a system that ran MS DOS.

Microsoft Outlook

In my information technology career I served as part of a team supporting more than 6,000 corporate users of an email system based on Microsoft Exchange and Outlook. I have provided classroom training sessions on optimizing an Outlook based calendar, as well as organization of a mailbox using rules and sub-folders. As part of that email systems admin role, I also became proficient at troubleshooting Outlook related errors, and sync issues with smart phones and PDA devices.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Part of my career as an application support engineer requires that I present training materials to front-line support technicians. Much of that training is done through Microsoft PowerPoint slides incorporating text, screen captures and transition effects between slides.

Microsoft Windows

Supporting, troubleshooting and teaching Windows operating systems has been a core function of my information technology career. I am well-versed in versions of Windows ranging from early DOS-based Windows 3.1 and 3.11 for Workgroups, through subsequent NT-based Workstation versions of 2000, XP, 7, 8 and 8.1.

I also possess extensive knowledge and experience with Windows server operating systems and Microsoft's related Active Directory processes and services.

Microsoft Word

I have been using various versions of Word for nearly 20 years to create resumes, compile and present office productivity data and write business meeting minutes and agendas for a local museum. For these documents I have incorporated tables, graphs and charts and extensive use of other varied features within Word. I am familiar with versions from Word 95 to the latest Word 2013, and have taught co-workers and friends in its use.

Political Science

My BA in International Relations from UC Davis involved extensive studies in political science in addition to history, geography, economics and sociology. The political science studies combined with the other fields has provided me with a broad information set related to politics and government within the United States and around the world.

Public Speaking

I am a past president of the "Turbo Toasters", a Toastmasters public speaking club which used to meet at my former employer Intuit. Toastmasters allows its members to polish their speaking and presentation skills, and also teaches active listening and speech evaluation. Among members for which English was their second language, it also provided a means of improving general diction and pronunciation in a comfortable environment of corporate peers.

Social Studies

I have significant experience in social studies, parallel to my experience in political science tied to my BA in International Relations from UC Davis.

My academic background encompassed a diverse mix of subjects including sociology, political science, history, micro and macro-economics and literature from the U.S. and numerous countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America. All are applicable to social studies.

Study Skills

Through my various education-related activities, whether tutoring English to non-native speakers, training teammates and co-workers on use and support of software, or leading a Toastmasters public speaking club, I have stressed the importance of taking detailed and organized notes, repetition of study and homework exercises, as well as general exam preparation and optimal study habits.
