About Jacob

Hi. My name is Jacob.

I've earned my Associate Degree for Transfer in Physics from San Diego City College in December 2014 with a GPA of 3.49. In the Fall Semester of 2015 I transferred to California State University at Fresno's Geomatics Engineering program as a full-time student. Upon completion of my first year toward a Bachelors of Science degree this summer of 2016 I will be a junior at CSU Fresno with a 4.0 for my first year. My ambition is to complete the program at CSU, Fresno for my Bachelor of Science degree with at least a 3.5 as CSUF will waive tuition for the graduate degree, and my long-term career goal is to become an instructor of applied mathematics at the higher educational level.

Educational and Tutoring Background and Qualifications:

Immediately prior to my transfer I was employed by San Diego Community College District as a Senior Tutor and Supplemental Instructor since the Fall 2013 semester. I worked on the campus of San Diego City College as a Senior Tutor and Supplemental Instructor in the City College Math Center and Tutorial/Learning Center. My time at work was divided by assisting student learning in a one-on-one setting, group-study settings, and through presenting 1-2 hour workshop presentations of various algebra topics.

I began this job after filling my mathematics requirement as an engineering transfer student in the Spring semester of 2013. Since then, I've enjoyed tutoring so much that it caused me to change my career path to becoming an instructor at the higher level of education.

As a supplemental resource for learning, I've been responsible for leading workshops and delivering presentations including chapter reviews, group study-sessions, exam reviews, and concept extensions.

Working as a tutor at City College has been an invaluable experience. Beyond simply understanding the subject matter tutoring requires respect, patience, attentiveness, and strong communication skills. A characteristic that I believe sets me apart from others is that, I've been there... The key to my success as a student and, later, tutor is being able to address specific gaps in understanding that are required to make math, beginning with algebra, more coherent and easier to manage. At first I struggled in math. So I've had the same exact questions and confusion as the students I help! In this respect you could say that I have a universal understanding of the specific, principally algebraic, mathematical concepts as well as the most common misunderstandings. I still encounter challenges, but I've learned to be a problem-solver. I believe I can share with you skills and study habits that helped me succeed and excel in math. I can now be the person with answers that I'd wished for during my courses. I find great satisfaction in this.

When it comes down to it, I take math seriously. If the student's interest in the subject tends to stretch beyond required work I am more than willing to provide additional relevant practice. If I feel that the student is not putting forth effort, I will address this as well.

Thank you for reading, and I hope to work with you and help you find freedom from struggle.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have worked over a year as a senior algebra tutor and algebra supplemental instructor for San Diego Community College District at San Diego City College. I have presented workshops, exam reviews, and final reviews on a weekly, and often biweekly, basis.
