About Michelle

I am a San Diego native that graduated from UCSD with a degree in Human Biology before moving to London to earn first my MSc Applied Public Health and now my graduate medical degree.

I graduated from high school as a lifetime member of the California Scholars Federation, as an AP Scholar with Distinction, as a National AP Scholar, and as an IB Diploma recipient. I earned a 35 on my ACT Exam.

My past tutoring experience has included young children learning English and math, and adolescents and adults in most subjects including English, math, social sciences, and even test prep and job preparedness. I previously worked with international exchange students at UCSD, helping to improve their language abilities and coaching them on navigating them through the American system. More, I organized a German language table to optimize the language learning skills of our German language students at the University. During my time with the Moores' Cancer Center, I prepared an entire class of students for university and job applications, guiding them through lessons on grammar, personal statements, resumes, and more. As a Public Health student, I worked with under-serviced populations and taught groups of people from a variety of backgrounds about the key points of cardiovascular health.

Through my various areas of teaching widely diverse students, I learned how to find the most effective learning style for each individual. I do my best to ensure that each person I work with received the help that he or she needed rather than a typical cookie cutter lessons. I found that this has helped them learn well in ways that their teachers didn't have time to give them.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I had a 2170 on the SAT, and a 35 on the ACT.

ACT Math

I had a 2170 on the SAT, and a 35 on the ACT.

ACT Reading

I had a 2170 on the SAT, and a 35 on the ACT.

ACT Science

I had a 2170 on the SAT, and a 35 on the ACT. I am now a Biology major at UCSD

Algebra 1

I have tutored many high school students in algebra and other areas of math. I have gone beyond the high school level to taking higher level calculus courses at my university, where I study biology.

Algebra 2

I have tutored many high school students in algebra 2.

Biology

I am a biology student at UCSD and will be graduating in June. I passed by IB Biology HL exam while in high school, and received an A in my honors biology course in high school as well.

Calculus

I received 5's in both of the AP calculus tests, and am a UCSD biology student and so use Calculus on a regular basis in my classes.

College Counseling

I organized and taught in the UCSD Moores Cancer Center's Summer Sciences Enrichment program, where we taught underrepresented students how to prepare applications for jobs, university, and hoped to prepare them for graduate schools. This included writing personal statements, resumes, and letters of recommendation, among other things.

Elementary Math

I have tutored many high school students in algebra and other areas of math. I have gone beyond the high school level to taking higher level calculus courses at my university, where I study biology.
I also have younger cousins, and help them with their homework in math and other subject areas whenever I see them, so am still fresh with elementary school math!

ESL/ESOL

I have extensive work with the International Center of UCSD, helping those here on exchange programs become more accustomed to English and the American system.

Geometry

I have gone through math courses up until the higher levels of calculus. I still use geometry in many of my science courses as part of my biology major at UCSD

Precalculus

I took honors precalculus in high school, and passed with an A. I moved on to build on that in higher levels of Calculus throughout my high school and university career. Today, I still use much of what I learned in these math classes in my daily coursework as a Biology major at UCSD

Proofreading

Beyond proofreading my friends' papers, part of my job at the Moores Cancer Center is to proofread and edit papers to get them ready for publish.

Public Speaking

I used to be a theater student in high school, and would regularly get on stage for my performances. I have given several presentations for large groups of people about the research I have done. More, I taught a class of students for a summer program, where I taught them English, presented research, and taught them public speaking skills.

SAT Math

I had a 2170 on the SAT, and a 35 on the ACT.

Theatre

I spent my entire High school career as a theater student. By the time I graduated, I was a member of the International Thespians Society. During those four years, I became an honors member after completing over 600 cumulative hours of involvement in the theater.

TOEFL

I have prepared several students for the TOEFL test, with a perfect success rate thus far.

Trigonometry

I have taken math classes, including trigonometry, up until the higher levels of calculus. I use most of the math regularly in my coursework as part of my biology major at UCSD

World History

I passed AP World History with a 5. I then went to UCSD's Eleanor Roosevelt College where I used the same textbook as in AP World History for two years as part of the Making of the Modern World sequence. I passed each of my courses with flying colors, and have become more familiar with that textbook than almost any other book.

Writing

When I am not writing or editing papers, I love to read or write short stories and poems. I absolutely love words and work with them whenever I can.

Just Great! — I'm so glad I picked Michelle for my lessons! She is so nice, reliable, and always takes me and my wishes for lessons very seriously! What I want to improve most are the speaking skills. Since I work with Michelle I feel much more comfortable and secure in speaking and talking to people, thanks Michelle! Looking forward for our next 3 lessons and will be very sad when it's over... ...
