UC San Diego (Chemical Engineering)
UC San Diego (Master's)
Hi, I am Karen.
I have a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, and have teaching experience both from being a teaching assistant in college (fluid dynamics) and being the person everyone came to for help with math and science in both high school and college. My main philosophy in teaching is showing students the overall concepts and strategies for solving problems rather than just how to solve a specific problem. This sets students up to do well on tests and in the real world when problems may deviate from what they have seen before in class or homework. I received a score of 5 on the AP tests for Calculus AB, Calculus BC, and Chemistry, and know the strategies for doing well on these types of tests as well as the SATs.
I look forward to helping you meet your learning goals,

Karen is what you would expect from someone with the test scores and academic record she has--she's organized, logical, thorough, and precise. My son said, "she explains things well without going on and on." What we really appreciated was her ability to take a strong student with shaky habits and presentation skills (those kids who don't want to show their work or write things out) and mold him into a student who can speak and write about Chemistry, present his work convincingly, so that graders have "every reason" to give full credit. This was essential on the AP Chemistry test and it will also be essential in college where just cranking out the math isn't enough--you have to be able to communicate it. I'm convinced her assistance with regard not only to concepts but how to word answers helped my homeschooled son get a 5 instead of a 4, the top 8% instead of the top 23%, and a near perfect score on the Chemistry SAT. He knew this growth was happening too, because he kept telling me he wanted to keep going. Never once, not even on weekends or vacation, did he want to skip tutoring session.
She taught me the things I didn't understand about my packet. She had me think about it and when I didn't get it she would jump in and help.
My son needed some help with the SAT Math Level 2 subject testing and she's an excellent tutor. She's extremely knowledgeable, patient and has the ability to teach in a manner that was very easy to comprehend.
Karen helped me review material for my upcoming quiz, which will help a lot in improving my grades. She was kind and patient, and really helped me understand the concepts.
Karen helped me with General Chemistry. Had experience with other tutors but Karen explained it to a level where I can completely grasp the concepts. I learned effective ways to approach the problem and systematically solve it. What's more, without knowing it, the improvement of my grades followed. I began to feel more confident with doing the problems on my own. She is very thorough and very patient. On a Scale of 1 to 10, she is 9.
Karen S. was very quick to respond to my emails, she took me on at the last minute and she was very patient with me. I am horrible at math and Karen took the time to repeat the steps even after the tenth time of me getting them wrong. Thank you!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. I was a teaching assistant for fluid dynamics while in graduate school and taught both small groups of students and one on one. I was also the go to person in my group of friends in undergrad if someone needed help with their homework.
Karen S. passed a background check on 3/5/15. The check was ordered by another user through First Advantage. For more information, please review the background check information page.
After sending a message to Karen, you will be able to order a new background check for $7.99. As part of your tutor selection process, we encourage you to run updated background checks. Please also review the safety tips for hiring tutors.
