About Robert

My passion for teaching reaches back to my grad school days and I have taught ever since, doing writing intensive courses while working as a highly regarded professional journalist, critic and editor. In my courses, I have worked one-on-one with many students and helped them with all aspects of their writing, from grammar to structure to style. My style is of working is conversational, common sensical and positive. Writing is a learned skill and the process of learning it can provide any student with a fulfilling and pleasurable experience. I have a PhD in English, but my style is down to earth and accessible. I also am an expert in American literature, American history and American art history and can assist students in all of those areas. I look forward to helping students at all levels, from elementary to high school. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

As someone who did extensive graduate work in American cultural history I know how to highlight key individuals, events and trends from the Colonial era to the present. I believe in bringing this history to life and also focusing on the student's needs in a course of study. My background involves both teaching about American culture and history as well as scholarship and journalism on this subject.

Art History

I am a professional art critic and scholar. For 25 years, I worked full time as a critic. My graduate studies focused on modern art history as well as literature and I have also aught art history courses at the University of San Diego for the past 15 years.

Art Theory

Art theory is simply the ideas that underlie writing about art and studying its history. I am well versed in such theories, from Plato to the present. To me, it is the foundation of my extensive work as an art critic and art history professor. I believe that all such theories are valuable to know, whether one agrees with a particular one or not. And I happy to tutor anyone in the ideas that animate artists and commentators alike in appreciation of art.

College Counseling

As someone who has taught extensively at the University Level, I have advised many students about graduate school applications as well as as transfer applications. I am well versed in the college application process as well as in the kind of personal statements and essays that admissions staff are seeking. This knowledge, coupled with my large experience teaching composition, writing and English as well as my professional editing experience, will allow me to provide students with the kind of perspective and counsel that will enhance their process of creating successful applications.

Literature

In my doctorate, I combined work in American literature and art history. I have taught courses in American literature, spanning works from the Colonial era to the present. I know how to teach individual texts, fiction or non-fiction, and cover different eras so that a student can write clearly and appreciatively about them. I have a passion for this subject and can make it enjoyable as well as informative for students at many levels.

Study Skills

My educational background includes a lot of counseling of students about what colleges fit their criteria, whether for grad school or for transferring. I have also assisted many students with essays for college applications. I have a broad knowledge of the American college landscape, from the community college to the university level. I can help students with the essay process for college applications, as well as personal statements and with making good choices for schools that fit their particular skill and aptitude level, whether at the undergraduate to graduate level.

Writing

My work in writing and editing encompasses many years of teaching as well as extensive work as a professional writer and editor. I have always loved teaching and working with students individually. I continue to teach at the university level, but enjoy equally working with elementary and second school students.

The very best tutor! — It is a true pleasure for me to write this letter of recommendation for Robert Pincus, who has been my tutor. Robert is without question the best tutor I have had. He is a careful and creative thinker who helped inspire me to find my way through the difficulty of writing several essays. Robert was very generous with his time and energies. Robert is not only an excellent tutor but is also personal ...
