I have been a full time teacher in the elementary grades on and off since graduating college. I have taught and tutored in Aventura, FL; Ma; RI; NJ; and the Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan. I have also tutored in Jamaica, West Indies. There I was a volunteer teacher for remedial reading at a local public elementary school. A year ago I returned to my full time elementary school (ACES) to substitute in elementary and middle grades. I have recently moved to San Diego this past July.
There are a few goals I live by in the field of teaching: I want to be the best teacher I can be - proud of the work I have done, and knowing I gave my best effort in everything I did. I want to motivate, inspire, and help my students love learning. No matter what the age, there should be an affectionate enthusiasm for learning I will endeavor to nurture in all of my students. I want to keep growing and learning in my profession that I have always loved. I believe teaching is a process, not only a profession; therefore, I want to learn from both my successes and challenges as a teacher. I also believe it is imperative to have good communication with the parents to share insights and experiences. Simultaneously, it remains important to have good communication with fellow educators.
It is with both great confidence and years of positive feedback that I say this: I truly believe I have a talent for teaching (including tutoring), and building relationships with children. I have many letters from parents as well as from the principal stating how pleased they were with my teaching and nurturing of their children. I would love to get back into the teaching field as a tutor, giving me a one-to-one relationship with each student. I hope I will be given a chance to help your child in the elementary grades for English, writing, grammar, reading and mathematics. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My certification for teaching grades K through 6 expired in 2013. I have taught much of my adult life in the elementary grades. I substituted in elementary and middle schools last year. I have a wonderful recommendation from my principal where I taught Kindergarten for a few years in Aventura, FL.
I am well qualified to teach English (grammar, writing, phonics, etc.) as well as mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
I also have a personality that responds well with young children - as they respond well to me. I am able to improve their abilities in the subjects mentioned above.
I taught Kindergarten three years. When I tutored in Jamaica, I was also teaching phonics. Because of those years of teaching the foundations of reading, i.e. phonics - I have a long and complete background in this subject.
I have taught reading for many grade levels. I have a great deal of experience in this field.
Every student learns differently but there are age-appropriate strategies to help students learn the foundation of study skills for elementary and later years, as well as in adult life. Strategies like organizing their papers, organizing their space in their desks, book bag, locker, organizing their time, when to use study skills i.e. when learning to read, learning to take notes, learning new vocabulary, and developing work habits that will improve their grades, their retention, their self-esteem. I have used these and other skills to assist my students in improving their studying habits.
