I tutor math, test prep, and Spanish with patience and focus, and I love to help students succeed and build confidence in their skills. I sincerely believe that no question is ever stupid, because sometimes it just takes the right starting point or concept in order for everything to click and move forward. My philosophy on tutoring is that it's important to find out exactly what the student's point of confusion is so that I can help him/her build a foundation. My job is to listen and find out how to help, and then make sure that learning goals are met. I believe that good study skills are important, and I try to set an example on how to organize an approach to a problem and how to think critically and logically about it in order to succeed in solving it.
I have experience tutoring all levels of math and all types of students. I have tutored high school students in my neighborhood, and my own son, so I am familiar with high school math assignments and textbooks. I taught a unit in coordinate geometry at a SDUSD high school and passed the three math CSET tests for teacher credentialing. These are just a few of my accomplishments in pursuit of exploring my own goal to teach. I have spent many years as an engineer in telecommunications, and my academic background includes math courses from algebra through calculus, linear programming and probability and statistics, along with lots of science. Math is just one of my interests and accomplishments. I am well versed in Spanish as well, including grammar and literature. I studied art and history in Spain at the University of Barcelona for a year. I tutor math, test prep, and Spanish with patience and focus, and I love to help students succeed and build confidence in their skills. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken and passed the CBEST exam. I am highly qualified to teach the CBEST mathematics portion as well as all the subject matter contained in the test. My specialty includes helping students understand at a conceptual level the math skills needed to pass the test.
I am well versed in the Spanish language, including years of study of both grammar and literature. I started studying Spanish in elementary school, and continued through high school and college. I also studied art and history in Spain at the University of Barcelona for a year.
My study skills knowledge comes from my successful academic experiences learning math, science, writing, and languages, and also from my many years of experience completing engineering projects on the job. I have also taken many courses in education, learning styles, meta-cognition, and basic skills development.
Study skills include learning how to organize materials and resources, practice time management, prioritize tasks, and use text books, references, and calculators appropriately. All of these are very important and basic to learning how to study, how to approach and define assignments, and how to move forward towards a successful learning outcome. When I tutor, I always help my students with their approach to the task, including how to think about and define the steps, the concepts involved, how to break something down into parts, and how to fit the assignment into the larger picture of what they are learning (the context). Fundamental to all of this is the practice of organization. For example, with math it is important to write out math calculations clearly from step to step, and to learn to understand the process of how to approach a problem or task in order to solve and complete it. Many students just need to see and define a road map which will help them get started, and begin to bring some clarity to something that seems very confusing.
Study skills also may include using different approaches to learning something, such as verbal and aural practice, written practice, repetition, memorization aids, etc. I always assess which study skill will best help my student achieve success within a specific situation. I have tutored many different types and levels of students, and I draw from my own experience and success in both academics and project management to identify what the study weakness may be, and work with them on developing their own successful approach to studying and completing assignments.
