Stanford University (English Literature)
My tutoring experience started during my Freshman year at Stanford University, when I traveled to Papua New Guinea to teach a variety of subjects to a class of seventh graders. After battling malaria, I returned to the States having lived without electricity and running water for two and a half months. The following summer, I decided to take a break from my studies in Biology at Stanford to attend Columbia University, where I studied the Bible and Abnormal Psychology. After finishing my semester as a visiting student with a 4.0 GPA, I flew abroad to study English Literature at Oxford University, where I achieved a 3.8 GPA. Upon returning to Stanford, I switched my major from Biology to English Literature, in addition to adding a minor in Cognitive Neuroscience. I spent my senior year writing a 70-page Honors thesis and tutoring students at East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring. I graduated from Stanford University with Honors and a 3.8 GPA and was immediately accepted into the Master's program for Cognitive Neuroscience. After the gut-wrenching decision of forgoing the Master's program in favor of my career as a musician, I started tutoring again because of the flexibility and fulfillment it affords me. I have been tutoring for the past year now, and I hope that I can continue doing so for as long as I can.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During my senior year at Stanford, I tutored 2nd and 3rd graders at East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring. Upon graduation, I started tutoring two middle-schoolers in all subjects, which I have been doing for the past year. I also taught all subjects at a primary school in Papua New Guinea for 3 months after my freshman year at Stanford, and I am currently a substitute at a Child Development Center.
I have been playing and writing music since I was ten years old. I am currently a professional musician in an Indie/Folk/Island/Jazz band called Ed Ghost Tucker, and I am the predominant songwriter for the band. I have helped fellow musicians become songwriters by encouraging their creativity, fostering their confidence, and focusing heavily on rhythm, sound, and melody. My methods rely on a close engagement with and attention to master songwriters like Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, and Lennon/McCartney.
