About Nicholas

I am a PhD student in the History of Science at UC San Deigo, with two years of experience as a TA in the Revelle College Writing Program and five years as a tutor in a variety of subjects, including specializations in English literature, language arts, history, elementary science and math, and test prep for AP, PSAT, SAT, ACT and SSAT exams.

My method is centered first around encouraging students to have confidence in what they already know, and to take an interest in discovering their own abilities and potentials. It's been my experience that students always perform better when they can be convinced of their own strengths, and then spend time focusing on less familiar material. With test preparation, I focus on strategies specific to each test and built on the student's own strengths and weaknesses.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Three years' experience tutoring students in preparation for the ACT exam, with a focus on test-taking techniques geared toward the specific differences between the ACT and the SAT.

American History

My field of study as a PhD student at UCSD is history, with a specific focus on science and US history. In addition, I have two years' worth of experience tutoring students in AP US History, as well as preparing students for the SAT II. I find that the most promising method for tutoring students in this field is to show them what they already know, and help put it into context by establishing a running narrative that treats historical events as a unified progression over time.

English

I have been working as a teaching assistant in the Humanities program at the Revelle College at UCSD for two years. My duties have included leading discussion sections twice per week, and working with students individually to help them learn to develop their writing skills at a college level. In addition, I have two years' experience tutoring students from grades four through 10 in English, including regular weekly classes in which we read one book per month, and students were assigned an essay with revisions for each book we read.

European History

I am a PhD student in UCSD's History department, and have an extensive background in both European and Middle Eastern studies. I have also tutored students for two years in AP US and AP European history. In the context of European History, I believe that the best approach is to work with students to develop an understanding of how different regions develop in parallel over the course of several hundred years of history, emphasizing mutual context and causal links between events.

Proofreading

I have several years of experience as a TA in a College writing program, four years as a tutor in English, and four years prior to that creating content for the website of a Public Library.

PSAT

I have tutored two classes in PSAT prep in the last three years for a tutoring center called NEI - Nobelist Educational Institute, as well as working with several students each year for the last several years in preparation for the test.

Public Speaking

I have two years' experience tutoring students in public speaking, three in helping students to draft public speeches, and three more performing in a weekly story-time with families at the DC Public Library.

I have also presented papers for the History of Science society and UC Graduate Student Association, and written and performed monologues as part of a comedy troupe in Buffalo, NY.

Reading

Three years teaching a weekly book club course for grades 4 through 8 (divided by year), and several years prior to this running a weekly family story-time at the Public Library. My technique involves consistent exposure to a variety of genres and styles of writing, with quizzes and discussion geared toward bolstering comprehension through critical engagement.

Writing

My writing portfolio is diverse, including both fiction and nonfiction published in academic and professional venues.

In 2006, I published several short stories in the student literary compilation, Channelmarker, at Tidewater community College. In 2008, I wrote a one-act play called "Buzz", which was performed by the Theater Helden company at the Alt Theater in Buffalo to positive reviews. In November, 2012, I published a short story through Torquere Press, a romance imprint.

As an undergrad in the Honors Program at the University of Maryland in 2009, I published a paper entitled "Cyborg Feminism" in JANUS, the student history magazine, taking first prize. I wrote my honors thesis there on a similar topic, "A Machine For Learning", a research paper on the application of cybernetics to social sciences.

I am currently finishing a research paper on the history of the development and marketing of the first cybernetic prosthetic elbow, the Boston Arm, which will become an integral part of my dissertation.
