I enjoy working with students of all ages because I enjoy people! Every individual is unique with their own set of giftings and talents. The one thing we all have in common is the need to be able to communicate clearly. The ability to read, write and speak effectively is key to almost every endeavor in life. Sometimes we need support learning skills that will take us to the next level. This is the goal of my tutoring.
I have tutored ESL and homeschooled my 2 sons from elementary all the way through highschool. I have a degree in Linguistics with a Portuguese minor and a certificate in Applied Linguistics. I have also studied Spanish and French. In the last 4 years I have been tutoring primarily elementary school students in the language arts, particularly spelling and writing. I have also helped to coach competitive speech and debate at the highschool level for the last 8 years.
The ability to read and understand what we read is necessary in all of life. In working one on one I can give attention to each students reading proficiency and then address specific needs.
After homeschooling my own children I am very familiar with the teaching process. Many times what children need is one on one interaction to help them through the trouble spots. This allows me to help them in ways that are unique to their learning style. Sometimes a classroom setting is not able to accommodate this type of learning process and that is the beauty of schooling at home.
I use phonics-based curriculum exclusively. My background in linguistics has given me a strong appreciation of the sight-sound connection necessary in reading and writing. This is reflected in all of my work with my students.
It really doesn't matter how old you are or what your work experience. A strong grounding in the language arts will only enable you to be more successful in whatever you do in life. I would love to partner with you or your child by coming alongside and helping to make that a reality! Please contact me to learn more and schedule our first session. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have homeschooled my own children for the last 16 years. My oldest son has just graduated college and my youngest will begin university this Fall. I have been tutoring for the last 4 years, 2 years with ClubZ and the last 2 years independently.
I have been tutoring this subject for the last 4 years with ClubZ In-Home Tutoring. I have an AB in Linguistics with a certificate in Applied Linguistics. I work with the Spell To Write and Read curriculum as well as with Institute for Excellence in Writing curriculum both of which are based on the sight-sound method of teaching phonics.
