About Michael

I have a BS, MS, and PhD in Electrical Engineering and over 10 years' experience in tutoring math students of all ages. I scored perfectly on the math portion of the PSAT, SAT, SAT II MATH IIC, ACT, AND GRE, as well as a 5 on the BC Calculus AP exam. I can help you prepare for exams, in addition to: algebra (any level), geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, graphing, inequalities, matrices, derivatives and integrals.

Like many things, math is best learned by doing (by solving problems), and this is where I always start. Students tend to spend too much time on the types of problems they are best at - I will push you to do just the opposite. I identify where a student becomes stuck, and then go back to explain how to solve, and why it works. This often involves generating new problems on the spot which focus on fixing that missing link.

I will NOT teach my students a brainless set of steps to solve a problem. Not just because the student will never be able to apply what they've learned, but also because if the teacher makes any changes, everything falls apart.

I am very responsive by email, and students benefit a lot from being able to get little questions answered, of course at no charge. I will travel to most places in San Diego. If it's a bit outside/the distance is far, I may request an additional fee.

Please contact me so we can discuss what you're looking to get out of the lessons and if I'm a good fit.

Hope to speak with you,
Mike

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I scored perfectly on the math portion of the ACT, and have tutored many students with good success.

Algebra 1

I have tutored many students in Algebra 1, with great success. This includes students of a variety of ages.

Logic

I have studied and tutored logic both in high school, as well as in college. In college, I studied logic as an electrical engineering course, and also as a philosophy course. All use the same rules, but some courses use True/False, some use 1/0, and have varying levels of complexity.

Precalculus

Precalculus is a unique math subject in that it covers quite a lot of different topics. My strength is having a mastery of all of the topics, and connecting their key concepts so that the student does not feel as if they are learning 10 different subjects.

Probability

I have tutored a number of students in probability with great success. Probability is one of the easier subjects to relate to real-world problems, and this can make the learning experience more effective and more fun.

PSAT

I scored perfectly on the math portion of the PSAT, and have tutored many students with good success.

SAT Math

I scored perfectly on the math portion of the SAT, and have tutored many students with good success.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry can seem very abstract at first, but once I show a student the meaning of each function and how they are related, the equations and notation don't seem so foreign anymore. Once the students "get it", they begin to notice trig in nature everywhere, no further than the waves in the ocean.
