About Michael

I have a BS, MS, and PhD in Electrical Engineering and over 10 years' experience in tutoring math students of all ages. I scored perfectly on the math portion of the PSAT, SAT, SAT II MATH IIC, ACT, AND GRE, as well as a 5 on the BC Calculus AP exam. I can help you prepare for exams, in addition to: algebra (any level), geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, graphing, inequalities, matrices, derivatives and integrals.

Like many things, math is best learned by doing (by solving problems), and this is where I always start. Students tend to spend too much time on the types of problems they are best at - I will push you to do just the opposite. I identify where a student becomes stuck, and then go back to explain how to solve, and why it works. This often involves generating new problems on the spot which focus on fixing that missing link.

I will NOT teach my students a brainless set of steps to solve a problem. Not just because the student will never be able to apply what they've learned, but also because if the teacher makes any changes, everything falls apart.

I am very responsive by email, and students benefit a lot from being able to get little questions answered, of course at no charge. I will travel to most places in San Diego. If it's a bit outside/the distance is far, I may request an additional fee.

Please contact me so we can discuss what you're looking to get out of the lessons and if I'm a good fit.

Hope to speak with you,
Mike

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Electrical Engineering

I have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Boston University and M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University of California, San Diego.

Logic

I have studied logic both in high school, as well as college. In college, I studied logic as an electrical engineering course, and also as a philosophy course. All use the same rules, but some courses use True/False, some use 1/0, and have varying levels of complexity.
