I'm a tutor who has had experience helping people of various ages and ability. My tutoring is effective enough that I am able to turn students who are seriously struggling around.
One of my students was a child who had difficulty focusing and working with tutors so many had given up on him. When I began working with him he was failing his class. By creating a structure which was specific and unique just for him, after observing his behavior, I was able to create a supportive and trusting working relationship with him. In just a month, his exam grades went from in the 50% area to in the high 80% area.
My secret is how I approach students. First, I don't see them as just students-- I see them as people. I am going to school for Marriage and Family therapy so I care deeply about my relationship with students. By paying attention to their personality and learning style, I can create more effective and personal teaching methods. I also create a strong teacher-student relationship which is key to getting students to invest in learning with me and feel comfortable working with me. This is why I am able to help students who have struggled with other tutors. Second, I care that they have a handle on the concepts and feel confident about approaching the material. Therefore, I will go above and beyond their assignments with my own questions to ensure they can answer things on their own. I will never assume that a student understands me right off the bat and am always willing to change the way I am presenting the information if necessary.
Lastly, I also was PSAT finalist, which means I scored in the top 99.9th percentile on the PSATS, scored an 800 in writing, 790 in verbal, and 700 in math on the SATs. This was done completely by self- study-- I never once took a course. This means that I know extremely well how to study for an exam like this and the effort, methods, and schedule necessary for my students to accomplish the same thing. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
