About Boris

Dear Students and Parents,

I am a professional educator with a strong background in English and Math and experience working with students of all ages and ability levels. If you work with me, I will give it my all so you can reach your goals of staying on track in the classroom, appealing to top colleges and universities, or leaping ahead in your career. You will gain much needed confidence, discover strategies and formulas for success, and practice thoroughly so that the "real thing" will be easy by comparison. Try your first session risk-free and let me show you how I will be your personal catalyst to the success you desire.

I possess two teaching credentials and currently teach at a K-8 charter school in San Diego. My efforts have included developing and implementing curriculum plans for English Language Arts, preparing students to excel on standardized tests including the new Smarter Balanced exam, and launching a basketball program for boys and girls. I have also tutored my students in Algebra, US History and Science. Through these efforts, my students have improved their reading scores, performed well on common assessments, and reached learning goals in the classroom. The greatest reward, though, has been helping my students work towards a promising future.

Even before I became a full-time teacher, I had several years of experience relevant to teaching. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in journalism and worked in the field for five years as an editor, reporter, and online producer in Washington D.C. At one newspaper I managed a team of college interns, working with them on their writing skills. At an online publication I directed a Writing Workshop for high school and college students. Later, I worked as an academic tutor for a company specializing in SAT preparation. I then launched a private tutoring program, focusing on English and Math instruction. During this time I helped students prepare for exams and achieve desired results in their classes. I also assisted families in making important educational choices.

If you are serious about working hard to meet all of your goals and strive towards a fulfilling future, contact me and we will get started right away. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Boris T.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I work particularly well with students in the middle grades and high school on their math curriculum. I know algebraic concepts well and have plenty of experience teaching the subject. A lot of kids struggle with Math because they get frustrated easily and start to hate learning it. I have a good track record of keeping students interested and on task and improving their understanding drastically.

American History

I was a student teacher for an American History class in the Fall of 2012 and I have years of experience tutoring in the subject. My methods involves teaching history in the context of today's world and this sets me apart as a social studies teacher. I provide materials that make the content comprehensible and relatable to my students, and they are able to explain what they are learning rather than just memorize facts.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am enrolled in a Middle Level Teacher Credential Program and will earn a Multiple Subject (K-8) credential in May. I have passed the Multiple Subject CSET to demonstrate mastery of K-8 subject matter. It consists of three sub-tests: Subtest I covers reading, language, literature, and history; Subtest II covers math and science; Subtest III covers visual and performing arts, physical education, and human development. I have experience tutoring K-8 students one-on-one and in small groups.

Elementary Math

I am a K-12 teacher candidate at Cal State San Marcos and will receive my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential in June. I have passed the Multiple Subjects CSET Subtest II, which shows mastery of elementary Math and Science. I have two years of experience tutoring Math for grades K-8 in addition to teaching advanced and SAT math.

English

I am currently studying for a career as an English teacher and I was a student teacher for an 8th grade Language Arts class in Poway last semester. I have a degree in Journalism and English and have worked as a professional writer and editor since 2008. English is my expertise and teaching the language to students is my passion.

ESL/ESOL

I am completing my Teacher Credential this semester at Cal State San Marcos and have already completed the coursework necessary for authorization to teach English learners with a grade of A-. I have applied strategies for teaching ESL in my student teaching experience and wrote a paper on my methods and successes that was deemed exemplary by the College of Education at CSUSM.

Proofreading

I am currently a senior editor for DCSportsFan.com and I was an editor for The Current Newspapers in Washington D.C. from 2009-2011. I hold a degree in journalism from The Phillip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Reading

I am an experienced English teacher, currently teaching 7th and 8th grade. I have also instructed elementary, high school and college students. My background is in journalism and my expertise is helping students at all stages of development improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Knowledge of 21st century communication ensures that my instruction focuses on skills applicable in today's world.

SAT Math

While studying to become a full-time teacher I worked as an academic tutor in 2012, specializing in SAT preparation. I then launched a private tutoring program, focusing on English and Math instruction. During this time I helped students prepare for exams and achieve desired results in their classes. I also assisted families in making important educational choices.

SAT Reading

I have tutored SAT students for the past year and excel at improving their study habits and helping them manage their time most effectively before the test and during. I am an expert in the subject matter and my familiarity with the test helps students develop appropriate test taking strategies. I am able to remove a great deal of stress from the equation and put students in the best position to succeed.

SAT Writing

I know the SAT Writing section well and have a good feel for what graders are looking for on the essay portion. I provide sample essay prompts and breakdown practice essays to show students what they are doing well and exactly where they need work. I also offer valuable strategies for completing the multiple choice questions and develop individualized plans for completing this portion most efficiently.

Study Skills

I am a teacher credential candidate at Cal State San Marcos with one year of student teaching experience. I understand the organizational needs of students and what instructors are looking for in terms of homework, test preparation and time management. I have tutored students in study skills for three years and I have the knowledge and experience necessary to help them effectively prepare for class.

Writing

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a concentration in English and I worked as a professional reporter and editor for The Current Newspapers in Washington D.C. for three years until 2011. I have hosted writing seminars and worked one-on-one with middle, high school and college students to improve their reading and writing skills. Teaching reading and writing is part of the coursework in my Teacher Credential program at Cal State San Marcos and I taught Language Arts in a middle school classroom last semester.
