About Christopher

I've been working with students aged 7-17 for the past 5+ years in an after school setting. Given this experience and such a wide range of learners, I believe that I can match my approach to your specific needs. I truly enjoy helping math learners uncover their own negative dispositions toward the subject by helping them build confidence through sound strategies and building blocks. My favorite moments are helping a student move from complete frustration and confusion to the overwhelming satisfaction of knowing "I can do this!"

I consistently hear from my students that they appreciate finally "understanding" the material after working with me. This stems from my desire to never rush a student through any topic. I am patient, encouraging and supportive in helping students define and reach their goals.

I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics as well as a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Providence College. I am comfortable working with students through Pre-Calculus. I am blessed to have found a job that I truly enjoy. I hope to be able to share this passion with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I've taught ACT practice sessions at an after-school program for the past 5+ years. I am familiar with all of the subjects and strategies needed to succeed on the exam. I also understand the anxiety of students when facing a high stakes standardized test like the ACT. I focus on not only building confidence in student's content knowledge, but overall comfort before the exam.

Algebra 1

I have an expired teaching credential for secondary math education. While I am not currently in the classroom, I have been working with students in an after-school setting for the past 5+ years. Many of my students have been enrolled in Algebra 1 classes, so I am up to date and familiar with the current needs of the subject. Algebra 1 is a building block for success in future math classrooms and I find great pride in helping students gain confidence in the topic.

Algebra 2

I have an expired teaching credential for secondary math education. While I am not currently in the classroom, I have been working with students for the past 5+ years in an after-school setting. Algebra 2 is my favorite subject to teach because it requires a sound understanding of previous topics and also requires students to have solid strategies for success. I am able to help students build these strategies and confidence in order to become confident and successful Algebra 2 students.

Geometry

As a college math major I am confident with college level Geometry. I've been working with high school aged students for the past 5+ years and enjoy helping them build confidence in the subject.

Prealgebra

I was a double major in college in both math and secondary education. Having a teaching credential to teach high school math I am well aware of the skills needed to achieve in pre algebra that will set up students for future success in math classrooms.

Precalculus

I have experience teaching precalculus in a 10th grade classroom as well as working with individual students for the past 5+ years at an after school program. Precalculus is an important topic as you build confidence toward taking higher level math.

SAT Math

I have been helping high school aged students with their SAT scores by coordinating practice sessions at an after-school program for the past 5 years. I am confident and comfortable with all of the subjects within the exam as well as the strategies needed to succeed. High stakes, standardized tests can overwhelm students and my teaching style helps them enjoy the process of building skills in order to score highly on the SAT.

Great Tutor!

As a sophomore taking Algebra 2 and geometry, balancing the two courses hasn't been the easiest task. And falling behind on concepts in Algebra 2 has brought my grade down quite a lot. When i started tutoring with Christopher, my stress was almost immediately put to rest. He is not only greatly skilled in Algebra 2 but is an amazing, understanding and patient teacher.
