My personal goal is to make learning fun and engaging for each student. I do this by developing lessons that incorporate the student's interests and strengths. It is important that the learning take place at an appropriate level and pace which is unique to each student. I am an experienced ESOL teacher, so I understand how to present information in a variety of ways. As a teacher I understand that it is difficult to structure lessons that meet every child's needs at all times. That is why I feel that as a tutor it is vital to understand the needs of my students so our time spent together can be enjoyable and beneficial. My experience is mainly working with elementary level students in grades 1-5. I do, however, speak Spanish and would be comfortable in tutoring students taking Spanish through a high school level.
I consider myself a person who is flexible and willing to work out a schedule that is best for both of us. I enjoy leading students through the learning process and seeing them succeed. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have my bachelor's degree in elementary education from Kutztown University. I have been working in an elementary school for the past 5 years. I hold a position as a support staff member, which gives me the opportunity to work with students across grade levels. I have experience teaching student at various levels of academic ability.
Through the completion of the four course ESL certificate program, I am certified by the State of Pennsylvania to teach elementary ESOL. I have taught this in an elementary school in my local school district for the past 5 years. As an ESL teacher, I have worked with students at every stage of English acquisition. I have also worked with students in 1st-4th grades.
As an ESOL teacher, grammar was a vital part of my daily lessons. Students need to understand the syntax and semantics of the English language in order to acquire it successfully.
