Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I grew up as a younger sister to a brother with dyslexia, and I was able to see him find some success through tutoring. As a high school teacher, I worked one on one after school with many students from my special education class -- students that needed extra time, tailored to their particular learning disabilities. I am confident that I can help tailor a learning plan for students with dyslexia; I have worked with a college student most recently, and she's found much success in "writing verbally" or recording her work before putting it all together in a paper. It has been a great experience to see how different approaches to dyslexia can work for different students.

Elementary (K-6th)

Since I was an 8th grader, I have been working with students who are in elementary school. Although I worked as a high school teacher in NYC, my first job was working with students in 5th through 8th grade, and I think elementary students are more open to learning and improving than any other group of students! I have a lot of experience with students at the elementary level, as I am an aunt to 8 nieces and nephews. Helping them has been a great joy for me. I hope I can help you too.
Homework and projects can be hard, but I can help you to accomplish work. In addition to that, I can work with students on reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, elementary math, and all the K through 6th subjects. Elementary students need special attention and specific instruction, and I can provide that for them.

When a student asks for help with a college admissions essay, I get excited for what will happen next. Writing that important essay is one of my most favorite things on which to work with students. Composing that essay is a unique, personal process for each student, and it's a specialty of mine to get an essay from an initial brainstorm to a final, fantastic product.

In addition to college essays, I have a background in journalism as well as in teaching writing from grades 5 through 8. I also worked as a writing center tutor at my university, and I can help on almost any writing project at any point in the process.
