My name is Evan. I am 29 years old and I am a full time teacher and tutor. I graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2013 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a minor Physics. I have been helping students do better in their coursework for as long as I can remember. I have tutored my classmates and anyone who came to me for help since I began high school. I actually started out by tutoring my younger brother in many of his math and science courses. I have always excelled in my coursework as well as in test taking skills and have used those skills to help teach people how to learn more effectively and efficiently.

It is because of my interest in how people best learn that I have taught at different elite programs around San Diego such as at the Bishop's School or at Art of Problem Solving. Even when students struggle with a concept, I am always able to find a way to get them to see that concept in a new light and why it must make sense. I may not find a good way to demonstrate the concept on the first attempt, or even the second, but I know how to take a complex and difficult to understand situation and make it make sense to anyone. This helps the student to become independent and understand it for their own reasons rather than based on what some authority stated.

In my eyes, the purpose of teaching should not be to overwhelm students with information and force them to memorize but to illustrate basic concepts and have them figure out the details so that they can see that the world really does make a lot of sense. My goal is for every student that I teach to feel empowered and capable of tackling the challenges ahead.

Drawing,

Drawing

I have been drawing and painting for approximately 9 years. I was taught in a classical manner of drawing that focuses on light, shade, and composition. My goal is to teach students how to draw realistically and accurately to life. I am best at both teaching and drawing portraits and figures, but am also able to teach the basics of still life and landscapes. I would love to teach any beginning or intermediate student how to draw.
Painting

Painting

I have been drawing and painting for nine years. The style of painting that I most appreciate is called romantic realism. This style can be summed up by saying that it is the depiction of the world as it could and should be. A picture painted in this style would be realistic and believable, but should also be idealized in a way that helps to better depict all the beauty that can be found in the world. I have several portraits and landscapes that I will show to any interested students upon our first meeting. I can teach drawing and oil painting techniques to anyone that wishes to learn how to depict life both accurately and beautifully.

Statistics

Statistics

Statistics and probability are a passion of mine. I took four separate upper division courses on the subject and have had exposure to game theory, business statistics, experimental design, and population comparisons. The ability to use statistics to draw conclusions is a powerful one, if used correctly. My goal when teaching the subject is to explain why even though when ice cream sales increase that drownings also increase it is not because people are drowning in their ice cream.

Calculus,

Calculus

In obtaining both my physics and engineering degree, calculus has been a necessary part of my everyday life. I can give examples of why the subject is useful as well as explain the best way to apply the different concepts in a way that is easy to understand. I am also familiar with both AP Calculus exams as I was able to receive a top mark on both of them when I took them. I can help to prepare any student looking to do well on the AP Calculus AB or BC exam.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

In high school, chemistry really clicked for me and it inspired me to go into chemical engineering. I use all the concepts that you will see in a high school and entry level college chemistry course quite regularly at both school and work. I have experience with both the AP Chemistry course as well the SAT II subject tests as I managed to attain a perfect score on each of them.
Physics,

Physics

I obtained a minor in physics in college and was able to receive a top score on both the AP Physics B & C exams. Physics is my favorite subject to tutor, as when taught correctly, each conclusion logically may lead to another. I am also very knowledgeable of the history of physics and can lend context as to why any and all of the subject matter is useful.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

On both the SAT Math section and the SAT Math 2 Subject Test I have scored a perfect 800. I mastered the subject material back in high school and continue to apply it in my daily life as an engineer. I know how to break down any and all the material covered on the exam to help any student achieve a high score.

So great we have booked another lesson tomorrow

Taught SAT questions in math. He was patient and didn’t move on until the subject was understood. Looking forward to him continuing teaching my daughter. Great first lesson!

Knowledgeable and paitient tutor

Evan was great! We hired him last minute to help our HS freshman son study for his finals. He was extremely knowledgeable in Algebra and Science but also helpful in English. We highly recommend him and hope to have the opportunity to have Evan tutor our son again.

Excellent tutor!

Evan is tutoring my son in pre-calculus. He has a way of breaking down the material that makes more sense to my son. After 1 1/2 hour session my son had a better understanding of the chapter and scored an A in his test. Working with him every week now.

Helped Prepare for Algebra 2 Final

Great Job Evan! Our son was really struggling and with your help he brought his final up significantly! Thank you!

Understands the material like the back of his hand!!

Evan was very helpful! I was very confused in my Physics class and he helped me an unbelievable amount. I was planning on meeting with a different tutor prior to my time with Evan, but the other tutor bailed on me last minute. I found Evan online the day before my midterm. He met with me that day for 2 hours and I understood everything. Prior to meeting with him I knew the material about 2/10 (1= not know anything) and after our session I felt like I was a 9 or 10!! It got me a great grade on my test and was worth every penny, maybe even more. Thanks a lot Evan! I'll see you before my next exam.

Makes Calculus Understandable

Excellent tutor who has the knack of breaking down Calculus so it is easily understood. Evan is very accommodating and manages to meet my son before scheduled quizzes/tests. We are very pleased with his instruction and highly recommend him for tutorial assistance.

Great tutor

Evan tutored me for Calc 2, he was a great tutor. He broke down the material for me to understand as well as being patient with me when i was completely confused. He brought me from a 58 to an 84.

Great tutor

I found Evan to be an extremely effective tutor. He was the third person I worked with and it was with him that the material (in this case, AP Chem) finally made sense. Thank you.

a great tutor that I can highly recommend...

Evan has been a great tutor for my son. He worked with my son this past summer for several weeks to help prepare him for some of the more challenging subjects that were to come up for him in the new 10th grade school year. They explored the subjects of Algebra II, Biology and US History. Evan is dependable, professional, reliable, flexible and has made tutoring time interesting too, so that my son enjoys the sessions. From our experience with Evan, my son and I both recommend Evan as a tutor if you happen to be looking. Sincerely, Michele
