About Evan

My name is Evan. I am 26 years old and I am currently a full-time teacher. I graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2013 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a minor Physics. I have been helping students do better in their coursework for as long as I can remember. I have tutored my classmates and anyone who came to me for help since I began high school. I actually started out by tutoring my younger brother in many of his math and science courses. I have always excelled in my coursework as well as in test taking skills and have used those skills to help teach people how to learn more effectively and efficiently.

It is because of my interest in how people best learn that I now teach physics and robotics at The Bishop's School. Even when students struggle with a concept, I am always able to find a way to get them to see that concept in a new light and why it must make sense. I may not find a good way to demonstrate the concept on the first attempt, or even the second, but I know how to take a complex and difficult to understand situation and make it make sense to anyone. This helps the student to become independent and understand it for their own reasons rather than based on what some authority stated.

In my eyes, the purpose of teaching should not be to overwhelm students with information and force them to memorize but to illustrate basic concepts and have them figure out the details so that they can see that the world really does make a lot of sense. My goal is to do that for any student that I help to teach in all of their courses.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

In obtaining both my physics and engineering degree, calculus has been a necessary part of my everyday life. I can give examples of why the subject is useful as well as explain the best way to apply the different concepts in a way that is easy to understand. I am also familiar with both AP Calculus exams as I was able to receive a top mark on both of them when I took them. I can help to prepare any student looking to do well on the AP Calculus AB or BC exam.

In high school, chemistry really clicked for me and it inspired me to go into chemical engineering. I use all the concepts that you will see in a high school and entry level college chemistry course quite regularly at both school and work. I have experience with both the AP Chemistry course as well the SAT II subject tests as I managed to attain a perfect score on each of them.

I have been drawing and painting for approximately 9 years. I was taught in a classical manner of drawing that focuses on light, shade, and composition. My goal is to teach students how to draw realistically and accurately to life. I am best at both teaching and drawing portraits and figures, but am also able to teach the basics of still life and landscapes. I would love to teach any beginning or intermediate student how to draw.

I have been drawing and painting for nine years. The style of painting that I most appreciate is called romantic realism. This style can be summed up by saying that it is the depiction of the world as it could and should be. A picture painted in this style would be realistic and believable, but should also be idealized in a way that helps to better depict all the beauty that can be found in the world. I have several portraits and landscapes that I will show to any interested students upon our first meeting. I can teach drawing and oil painting techniques to anyone that wishes to learn how to depict life both accurately and beautifully.

I obtained a minor in physics in college and was able to receive a top score on both the AP Physics B & C exams. Physics is my favorite subject to tutor, as when taught correctly, each conclusion logically may lead to another. I am also very knowledgeable of the history of physics and can lend context as to why any and all of the subject matter is useful.

SAT Math

On both the SAT Math section and the SAT Math 2 Subject Test I have scored a perfect 800. I mastered the subject material back in high school and continue to apply it in my daily life as an engineer. I know how to break down any and all the material covered on the exam to help any student achieve a high score.

Statistics and probability are a passion of mine. I took four separate upper division courses on the subject and have had exposure to game theory, business statistics, experimental design, and population comparisons. The ability to use statistics to draw conclusions is a powerful one, if used correctly. My goal when teaching the subject is to explain why even though when ice cream sales increase that drownings also increase it is not because people are drowning in their ice cream.
