About Cathy

I left teaching many years ago to go into the business world. I found it exciting, and fulfilling but am now circling back to my first chosen profession. I have a burning desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. I can now bring my life experiences, as a former business executive, citizen, parent and educator.

My teaching career was varied. In my career:
I taught inner city primary grades.
I taught ESL to foreign high school students
I taught reading to Hispanic/ Yaqui tribe students in high school
I taught reading to “at risk” youth in Phoenix inner city.
I was an “RSP” teacher grades 1-6
I was a curriculum specialist/ writer for 5 rural school districts for special education tracks from gifted students to Trainable Mentally Handicapped students.

Currently, I am an adjunct instructor of just one class in remedial reading at Southwestern College in Chula Vista CA. About half of my students are non native English speakers, so ESL is a large part of my curriculum. I incorporate reading, writing, speaking into the course using technology to help drive my teaching elements. I have received high scores in my performance from both teachers and my students.

In my business career, I owned a direct marketing company for 14 years and have extensive experience in direct marketing (list acquisition, printing, mailing, and telemarketing, e-marketing). Since the closure of my business, I was Director of Sponsorship for San Diego Pride, the Largest Single Day Event in San Diego, and I worked for Clear Channel selling radio advertising for their 7 San Diego radio stations with special emphasis on the two AM talk stations. I have over 25 years of experience in sales, marketing, advertising, copy writing and managing a staff.

I feel that am an excellent tutor because:
* I have a lifetime elementary certificate and a mild learning handicapped certificate
* I am organized and have good time management skills
* I have an excellent work ethic
* I have life and parenting experience
* I was trained by the top people in special education

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
