About Fred

Hi, my name is Fred. I have taught and tutored math in both high school and Grossmont College for over 15 years. I am certified to teach all levels of math in high school and have a Master's in Statistics/Biostatistics at SDSU. I truly enjoy teaching and tutoring students in math and statistics and I believe my student ratings reflect that. My method of combining patience, simplification and directness has surprised many students as the ease of learning concepts they originally thought to be very difficult.

I am extremely patient at teaching a concept and totally focused on the student's understanding of that concept. I specialize in simplifying concepts of Statistics and Calculus and am very adept at preparing a student for a test of any type. Much of this ability to prepare a student for a particular test comes from being a high school baseball coach for over 10 years. I have been very successful in working with AP Statistics and Calculus students.

As a retired teacher my schedule is very flexible and accommodating. I tutor daily from 12pm until 9pm and on weekends from 9am to 6pm.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have taught math in high school and have passed all tests required to attain single subject math certification for the state of California. I have tutored numerous students in preparation for their ACT and SAT math tests. I also am aware of and have access to the proper material to study.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra I at the high school and college level. While at Grossmont College I attained an 80% pass-rate, while the pass rate in the state of California was just 45%. I have tutored this subject every year for the past 15 years.

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra II in both high school and college. I have single subject certification to teach all levels of math in high school. I have tutored this subject every year for the past 10 years. I know the material and how to teach/tutor it quite well. I find it fairly easy to simplify this material for the student.

Baseball

I have been a high school baseball coach for eight years. I am currently one of the lead coaches on a very successful high school travel ball program called the "Mad Dogs." I played on a National Championship junior college program for Pasadena City College in 1967 and at SDSU after that. I specialize in hitting and base my approach on the philosophy of Ted Williams, Tony Gwynn and Darrell Evans.

Biostatistics

I have taken over 30 upper division credits in statistics and 3 of those were in upper division biostatistics and 3 were in the Graduate level of Biostatistics. I have tutored students successfully in biostatistics before. I am sure I can continue.

Calculus

I have single subject certification to teach Calculus at the high school level in the state of California. I have tutored Calculus students while at Grossmont College for over 10 years. I have quite a bit of experience successfully preparing students for their AP Calculus exam. I have found Calculus, like Statistics a course in which I have enjoyed great success in simplifying the concepts for the students.

Discrete Math

I have tutored numerous students in Discrete Math, while a teacher and tutor at Grossmont College. I have single subject certification in Mathematics and a Masters in Statistics. I know the material and I know how to teach it. I also am constantly upgrading my math skills with appropriate textbooks and online material.

Econometrics

I have recently attained a Master's in Statistics which covers the core concepts of Econometrics. I have recently audited Econ640 at SDSU. This is a graduate level Econometrics course. I also have recently tutored two students who both received A's in their Econometrics course.

Elementary Math

I have worked as a long term substitute teacher for many elementary and middle schools in my 15 years of teaching. This has given me much experience with working with students in elementary math. I have also taken multiple "math for elementary school teachers" courses at San Diego State University.

Geometry

I have taught this course in high school and have tutored students in it for over 10 years. I am certified to teach all levels of math in California high schools. I have found Geometry, due to its visual aspect one of the easier courses to simplify.

Linear Algebra

I have experience tutoring Linear Algebra students while a teacher and math tutor at Grossmont College. I have recently attained a Master's in Statistics which requires a good amount of knowledge in Linear Algebra.
I have taken Linear Algebra and received a B in the course. I know the material and as a teacher, I know how to teach it.

Logic

I have taken and passed discrete mathematics, which entails an extensive chapter on propositional logic. I am also about halfway through my Master's in statistics at SDSU, which contains a good deal of material based on the fundamentals of logic.

Prealgebra

I have taught this course at Grossmont College and have enjoyed a great deal of success with my students. I also have been tutoring this material with younger and older students for well over 10 years. I feel I am able to tutor these concepts in a very easy to understand simple and patient manner.

Precalculus

I have taught this material at both the high school and college level. I am certified to teach all levels of math in high school and have a Masters in Statistics. I know how to simplify this material quite well and have been very successful with the Precalculus students I have tutored.

Probability

I have attained a Master's in Statistics at San Diego State University. I know the subject material quite well and how to present it in a simple, easy to understand manner. I have tutored students from UCSD, USD and SDSU in this subject area with positive results.

Statistics

I have tutored statistic students every year for the past 15 years. I have taught elementary statistics in college. I just recently completed my Master's degree in statistics. I believe my student feedback speaks better than I can as to my ability to simplify and teach statistical concepts.

Trigonometry

I have attained single subject math certification for the state of California. I have tutored trigonometry students for over 10 years, both privately and while at Grossmont College. I know the material very well and more importantly how to tutor and/or teach it very well.
