About Jeffrey

I am a chemist by training and by trade. I use the fundamental concepts of chemistry every day. I also have three years of experience teaching undergraduate chemistry while I was a graduate student at UC Irvine.

My style of teaching emphasizes concepts and reasoning. The sciences can be overwhelming if you dive in head first, especially if you intend to memorize everything. But if you focus on a handful of basic concepts, you will be able to solve almost any problem. Furthermore, I know a great many real life examples of the applications of concepts of chemistry. These examples are very helpful in reinforcing the lesson in that they allow the student to see the concept in action.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

My degree is in Inorganic Chemistry, which I think is the best background to have for teaching general and high school chemistry. I need to directly apply the fundamental concepts of chemistry every day at my job. So not only are the concepts fresh in my mind, I have looked at them from every possible angle.

I have three years of experience teaching general chemistry on the college level at UCI. I have logged over 200 hours (about 100 through WyzAnt) tutoring high school and college chemistry. I worked with a broad range of students. Some wanted to improve from a B to an A or get a 5 on the AP exam, and some were completely lost. Regardless of your situation, I am completely confident I can help you achieve your goals.

Physics

Majoring in chemistry requires several physics courses, and a fairly strong understanding of physics. Additionally, I have over four years of experience tutoring physics at both the high school and college levels.

Poker

I have played poker with modest regularity for about 8 years. I have played in and beaten the small stakes games (i.e. no more than $300 buy-in) at Foxwoods, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles as well as online and at numerous home games. I have experience playing every major form of poker from Hold 'em to Triple Draw Low Ball. In all, I estimate my lifetime earnings of between $3000 and $3500.

In addition to my experience, I have a collection of 14 books about poker. I find books by Sklanksy and Malmuth to be particularly useful. Being a science nerd at heart, I like to teach and discuss the game from a mathematical perspective. Every decision is based on estimating the probabilities and expected values.

Precalculus

I have over five years of experience teaching high school-level math. The most common class is precalculus.

Very helpful tutor

He is helpful in explaining any wrong methods that I use when taking AP Chemistry Practice Exams. He also explained many concepts more deeply compared to probably many AP Chemistry teachers, especially since I am able to ask many questions to understand the subject concepts much better. Lastly, the way he explains does not bore me, he got my full attention in the 2 hours of lecture.
