About Andrew

Hello, my name is Andrew and I am a piano teacher, composer and college student. I am a classically trained pianist and have been playing for over ten years. I have been teaching for more than a year at Beach Cities Rock Club.

I enjoy playing and teaching many styles of music including classical, rock and pop. I am also an expert at music theory and have studied it as long as I have been playing piano and in High School I got a 5 on the AP music exam. In college I took the advanced harmony and musicianship classes and have a full understanding of chord progressions, figured bass, voice leading and sight singing. I am also a composer and have been writing music for years and studied music composition in college. In the 2011 competition Reflections PTSA, I won first place at the Orange County level with my composition “Snowflakes".

My music awards for piano include being an American Fine Arts Festival Winner, in which I played at Carnegie hall. I was also a finalist in the Southern California Junior Bach Festival. I have a level ten Certificate in piano from the Music Teacher's Association of California (MTAC). Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music Theory

As a pianist and music major I have an extensive knowledge of music theory. I have studied music theory for the last twelve years, as long as I have been playing piano. In High school I got a score of five on the AP music theory exam. I also earned a level ten certificate in piano from MTAC which included an advanced theory test. In College I took harmony 1, 2 and 3 and got A's in those classes. These taught me advanced theory including figured bass and voice leading rules.
