About Lisa

I am an Educational Therapist specializing in working with students struggling in reading and spelling. I use a multi-sensory structured literacy approach that is direct, explicit, interactive and structured. I have trained with linguists to be able to explain and teach spelling, while sharing how our English writing system works. I trained at the Dyslexia Training Institute in 2014 where I received my Dyslexia Specialist Certificate. I have a Master's degree in psychology and have worked with children for over 20 years.

If your child is struggling with any of the following issues, I can help them.
Reading:
-substitute sounds, such as reading "dran" for train
-trouble blending - sees "bread" but reads "bed" or "bead"
-guesses at words just by the first letter or letters of a word - sees "drop" but reads "damage"
-arbitrary pronunciation of written words with 2 vowels
-skips over function words (in, the, that) or misreads them
Spelling
-spells as it sounds, such as "does" as "duz" or "every" as "evry" or different as "difrent"
-unable to transfer words on spelling test to journal writing
-struggling to master "sight words"
-struggles with 2 or 3 syllable words

I can work with children of all ages. I can assist older children who have mastered reading, but spelling is not clicking for them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have had training in ADHD and executive functioning (EF). I've had training in educational scaffolding to assist with focusing, organization, reduced impulsivity, motivation and emotional regulation.

Dyslexia

I am trained in the Orton Gillingham (OG) approach by the Dyslexia Training Institute, which has the leading research for teaching reading and spelling with those with dyslexia. My training allows me to develop an individualize lesson plan for your student, rather than a scripted curriculum. This approach allows interventions to be targeted to a student's needs, which keeps the student interested and progressing at each lesson.

I am also trained in Structured Word Inquiry, which focuses on spelling. It is a wonderful approach to learning spelling which focuses on the dyslexic student's strength of reasoning rather than the weakness of phonics.

Handwriting

I've had training in dysgraphia. I have the ability to teach penmanship to create increased written legibility and the ability to supplement with electronic reinforcement.

Phonics

Training in Orton Gillingham by the University of San Diego. OG is based on the phonological process, teaching how to teach decoding through phonics. I went through an internship. I have been tutoring with this method for several years now.

Reading

I am an Orton-Gillinham trained tutor; I have knowledge of executive functioning; and experience with dyslexia and ADHD. I have access to Barton and Wilson Reading curricula.
