I am a credentialed English teacher and literature baccalaureate available to tutor students in grades 6 - 12 as well as the college undergraduate level.

I graduated, Cum Laude, from UC Santa Cruz with a bachelor’s in literature and earned my teaching credential at the University of San Diego. I taught the last 4 years at a San Diego charter school.

My experience in both Literature and Education ensures that I have the English content knowledge, as well as the ability to communicate this knowledge, to help students achieve.

I am located in San Clemente, though I am at Saddleback College several times each week. I’m willing to travel anywhere in south Orange County to meet for a tutoring session. If you would prefer a remote session to help with an assignment, I can accommodate that as well.

Grammar,

Grammar

Learning and retaining all of the grammatical rules, and exceptions to those rules, in the English language can be difficult for many students and second language learners. To aid in this struggle, we will assess your abilities, locate any weaknesses, and work together to better your understanding of English grammar. In this effort, we will utilize school assignments, essays, practice exercises, and worksheets.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Whether you need help proofreading a school paper, a piece of fiction, or a longer work, I can be of service. During my time studying literature in college, I wrote and edited lengthy papers and stories on a weekly basis. In that time, I gained a confident hold on each element of the English written language, from basic grammatical rules to complex rhetorical devices. If you would like to improve your proofreading skills, I can also help you accomplish this through an accelerated overview of the essential mechanics of the English language. We will identify the weak points in your understanding, and we will work together from there.

Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

The Verbal Reasoning portion of the GRE, a test for college seniors wishing to continue on to graduate school, assesses the extent of a student's vocabulary and reading comprehension. I scored in the top 2% of college seniors on this exam because I have an extensive vocabulary and an extensive knowledge of root words, prefixes, and suffixes. The English language that we have today has been steadily evolving from its birth, and new words are continually created from existing words or portions of words. When a student needs to improve his/her vocabulary, I aim to teach them how to recognize the root elements of a word and to compare the discovered root to words they already know. This way, they are not learning individual words, one by one, but are instead learning how to recognize and understand the meaning of any word.

Literature,

Literature

I majored in literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz. During my time there, I honed my skills in literary analysis, critical theory, and writing about literature. When analyzing a text with a student I aim not only to reveal 'what' the author is communicating, but also 'why' they are communicating their message in that specific manner. I have a strong knowledge of authors, poets, playwrights, and literary movements from around the world. This is an interest that I am continually fostering through my studies in and out of school.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

Students' scores on the Reading Comprehension section of the SAT were lower in 2012 than they have been in 40 years. Being prepared for the SAT Reading exam is, now more than ever, an excellent way for a student stand apart from the pack of college-bound seniors. When helping a student prepare for the Reading portion of the SAT, I utilize practice tests to assess a student's current level of ability; then, we work on various strategies for recognizing the important elements of passages; and finally, we work to understand the vocabulary and structure of the SAT Reading questions. When I took the SAT Reading test in high school, my scored placed me in the 94th percentile. I would like to help your student do as well or better than I did.
