Hello! My name is Karen and I’m currently a graduate student in the Inland Empire. This summer, I will receive my teaching credential to teach English and my Master’s in education. Before this, I attended UCLA, where I majored in English and minored in Creative Writing. I’ve worked as tutor for International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement students as well as college prep high school students. I’ve also worked as youth leader for elementary level kids, and as an aide for English Learners at the elementary and high school levels. This will be my career soon; I love the teaching and learning process and building relationships with my students!

I specialize in the subjects Spanish, English, and Theater. I’m a native Spanish speaker, which means that Spanish was my first language! As Spanish-only speakers, my parents didn’t allow me to speak English at home, so I speak it fluently and well to this day. I also enjoy Spanish lit and writing, which keeps my language agility sharp. I also have the skills and educational background to teach English. More importantly, I’ve worked with English Learners, where I’ve had to break down the language for those who weren’t native speakers. Overall, I am confident in my English skills—reading, writing, and speaking it—and feel my teaching background will also be helpful. I was involved in Theater arts in high school, including vocal training for musical roles. I won an award from the California Educational Theatre Association! To this day, I thoroughly enjoy and remember theater as well as keep up with productions.

Doesn’t it make sense to have a teacher candidate as your tutor? Contact me with any questions and we can schedule a lesson!

Theater

When I graduated high school, I obtained college-level credits for completing Theatre through my International Baccalaureate Programme, similar to Advanced Placement. I wrote a research paper on world theatre types, wrote and performed my own scenes and dialogue, and participated in school-wide productions. I sang and acted in musicals as well as playing a lead role in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," for which I received an award from the California Educational Theatre Association (CETA). I feel equipped to teach various elements of theatrical performance.
