I'm a trained Orton Gillingham teacher and work in a classroom with a reading program designed around its methodology. I regularly help children make incredible improvements in reading as measured by Dibels, a standard assessment of reading proficiency. I recently took three children in my class from red (below grade level) to green and blue (grade level and above grade level) in key measures in only 2 months. I've worked with children with early signs of dyslexia, speech issues, and other learning challenges and made wonderful progress with all.

In general, I have a passion for building foundational fluency in the core elementary subjects: reading, writing, and math. I have a deep understanding of the key steps children need to take to excel in elementary. As a previous high school teacher and tutor, I have a clear vision of what they'll need for success in later grades. I work daily to ensure the children in my class are making steady progress and are at or beyond grade level in all key areas. As a tutor, I bring my knowledge of the curriculum along with my understanding of how children learn to create truly impactful results.

I'm also passionate about the psychology of learning. To this end, I've worked in a psychology lab researching metacognition, a critical concept in developing students to be self-learners, and have taken various classes on the topic. I understand that teaching is a two-way process that requires work from both the tutor and the student. Effective teaching requires understanding the conditions under which true learning can occur, and I strive to apply proven principles of learning in my tutoring practice.
