About George

I'm a dedicated, passionate teacher and motivational speaker who knows how to connect with struggling students. As a member of the 1981 San Francisco 49er's Super Bowl championship team, I developed hydrocephalus (water on the brain), and survived 3 emergency VP Shunt brain surgeries in 8 months at age 23. In 1986, I returned to school to complete my Biology degree and survived 5 additional brain surgeries and several gran mal seizures during an 8 month period, while enrolled in Bio Chem, Organic and Physics courses. Despite developing dyslexia and major short term memory issues, I graduated with a BS in Biological Conservation in 1990 and began work as a wildlife biologist, and taught Algebra to English Language Learners, and Environmental Studies, Chemistry and Biology at the high school level for 2 1/2 years.

I've been a Wildlife Biologist for over 25 years and owned an Environmental Consulting firm, Visger & Associates Inc. for 12 years. I have hands on experience with scores of special status aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, avian and mammal species and vegetation surveys. Included in my expertise are bird banding studies, pit tagging amphibians, live trapping and radio-telemetry studies of San Joaquin kit fox and deer, and electro-shock stream surveys for fish, and several years of design, construction and management of large wetland mitigation banks.

I understand ecosystems, pollution and global warming impacts and am a fun (some say crazy), dynamic, teacher who knows first hand what it's like to struggle with learning disabilities, and how to get it done and have fun doing it. Give me 100% effort and I'll do the same and guarantee you WILL learn.

In 2010 I launched The Visger Group-Traumatic Brain Injury Consulting, using my expertise in brain injury recovery to help others, and have been published in US New and World Report, Slate Magazine and Sports Digest.

There's a saying in football, "Short, Choppy Steps." I'll teach you how to apply that philosophy to success in the classroom and in life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I can totally understand. I returned to school at Sac State in 86 at age 28 to complete my Biology degree with 4 semesters of Chem, 2 of Physics and 2 of Pre Calc left. Completed them all while surviving 5 emergency VP shunt brain surgeries.

You can do this!

Biology

Wildlife Biologist since 1990 with extensive, hands on experience studying a number of special status species (aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, fish, amphibians and reptiles, birds, bats, and mammal studies), in CA and OR.

I also taught Biology and Environmental Studies in high school for 2 years, tutored student athletes for 3 years, and owned an Environmental Consulting firm, Visger & Associates, since 2003.

Botany

As a wildlife biologist for 15 years I conducted numerous habitat assessments and vegetation surveys. I also TA'd Natural History of Plants in College, and constructed and managed wetland mitigation banks whose success was dependent on my vegetation surveys each year.

Ecology

As a wildlife biologist for many years, I'm an expert on ecology; i.e., interactions of various living organisms with their environment. I taught Environmental Studies for two years, and was also the Lands Manager for the largest mitigation banking company on the west coast for five years, where I helped design, construct and managed thousands of acres of created habitats (Wetlands, vernal pools, oak woodlands, upland habitats, etc.).

Football

I played on the undefeated 1975 A. A. Stagg high team in Stockton, CA and was selected Top 100 High School All- American, attended University of Colorado on a football scholarship, majored in Fisheries Biology, played in the 77 Orange Bowl, was a 3 year starter at Defensive End, and played two years with the SF 49ers, including as a member of the 1981 Super Bowl Championship team.

I've been inducted into the Stockton Sports Hall of Fame twice and the Stagg High Sports Hall of Fame twice.

Zoology

I've been a fisheries and wildlife biologist since 1990 conducting hands on protocol fisheries and wildlife studies and habitat mapping throughout California and Oregon for years. My original emphasis in college was 4 years of Fisheries studies, and I've been involved in a number of electro-shock stream surveys and IFIM studies. When I completed my BS several years later, I had completed 172 units and graduated with a degree in Biological Conservation.

I have extensive experience with special status aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates such as vernal pool fairy shrimp and valley elderberry longhorn beetle, special status amphibian species such as spade foot toad, pit tagging studies of California tiger salamander and red-legged frog, special status avian species such as southwest willow flycatcher, northern and California spotted owl and burrowing owl, bird banding studies of barn owl, kestrel and wood duck, and special status mammal species such as Giant kangaroo rat, San Joaquin kit fox and dusky footed wood rat.

I also taught Biology, Environmental Studies and Chemistry at the high school level for 2 years.
