About Michael

I am retired from an investment banking and finance career. I am widely read and widely traveled, with experience (and passion for) teaching and tutoring. I was an instructor for UC-Davis Extension in Sacramento, and a teaching and training manager at American Express, among other experience.

In my early career I was a teacher and counselor for Project Upward Bound, and I have been a coach in youth sports as well as life and development mentor. I have been an editor of the Denver Post and Wall Street Journal, and throughout my entire career have been told "I can out spell Spell-check"

At present I am the founder and proprietor of Mick's Custom Irish Tours - my web-based Ireland travel business. Being 'retired' my time is largely my own - so I am available most anytime to fit your needs and schedule, and most anywhere.

I have a degree in communications and journalism with extensive writing (and editing) background. I have studied English composition, grammar, vocabulary and regional linguistics. I created my website and continue to write not only its content and blog, but travel articles and guide books as well.

Most importantly I think is my passion for and enjoyment of English language.

I use MS Word almost exclusively in my writing and my former career. I have used - and continue to use MS Word extensively.

At this point in life I have the joyful opportunity to pursue my passion for teaching and tutoring - to share my knowledge and experience in Business, Banking, economics and finance, as well as English writing, reading and editing. I am a learned history buff also.

I'm known for my Irish wit and humor and like to bring that to teaching, tutoring and training. So if this sounds like the kind of instructor you need - contact me and let's get started !

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Baseball

I have played baseball since I was 10 years old - through youth, high school, college, and after.
I have coached Little League as well as junior high and amateur leagues.
I have followed and studied Major League baseball for over 30 years, and have a been a season ticket holder of the S.F. Giants at both Candlestick Park and ATT Park.
I have also been an umpire.

Bible Studies

I was raised Christian in an Irish Protestant household, and also have extensive exposure to Catholicism (Irish Catholic), and raised my own children in Catholic schools.
I was a Sunday School teacher in my church for a number of years 9 from ages 18 -to- 400. I am very close with my uncle who is an ordained Baptist minister and Doctorate/PhD of Theology.
I have studied the Bible, and took courses in Bible studies in college - including "The Bible as Literature" (Advanced Humanities - 440).

Business

I am retired from Banking and Finance career of 30 years. I was a Vice President of Wealth Management, and Senior Trust Officer for major banks.
I was a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and managing partner of American Express Financial Advisors practice, as well as a District Manger for American Express/Ameriprise Financial Inc.
I was twice named Sacramento "Financial Planner of the Year", and achieved "Master Advisor" status, among other accolades.
I have many designations, certifications, and CE business education too numerous to mention here.
Also served as an instructor for UC-Davis CFP program.

Soccer

Originally from Ireland, where football (American soccer) is second only to rugby and perhaps hurling. I have played since I was a wee lad, and have coached at many levels here in the US.
I am a USSF certified soccer referee, having done youth tournaments and high school matches throughout northern California.
I have conducted off-season soccer clinics, and was a founding member of a Sacramento adult co-ed soccer league.
I continue to follow my favourite professional teams and the World Cup.

Track & Field

This was mine (and my siblings') main sport after hockey and perhaps soccer. I ran track in high school and college, lettering in long jump and sprints.
I mentored my brothers and a sister in track -- all of whom exceeded my accomplishments in the sport.
I coached track for a local Jr. High school, and for the US Junior Olympics and AAU Jesse Owens Games.

Volleyball

I personally played a little amateur and intramural college volleyball - it's my mentoring, supporting, and following of the game with my spouse, our daughter, and her team(s) where I have extensive knowledge and experience.
My wife played for the University of Nevada where I helped her train and followed their matches. We raised our daughter in the sport, and she was named Metro Conference Player of the Year in high school, and recruited to play NCAA volleyball in college.
I mentored and worked with her and some of her teammates, and was named "team dad" of their NCAA college team - travelling with them and assisting at practices.
