I'm really a small town girl who grew up in Idaho, lived in Tucson AZ for nearly 25 years, and recently settled in Sacramento, CA.
I couldn't wait to get to college. As much as I love learning, I would have stayed there indefinitely, had my dad not finally realized that I had earned enough credits to graduate years before, and "gently encouraged" me to go out into the world. Shortly after, I earned a Bachelor's in Education from the University of Arizona, with Minors in French Lit and Psychology.
After several years of teaching high school English Literature, I eventually left education to pursue a career in law enforcement, because I was simply curious about the justice system, and how we could better serve our young people who are involved in the court system.
As a Juvenile Probation Officer, my emphasis was on prevention of delinquency, and my curiosity was piqued in trying to determine why some kids have the resilience that others seem to lack. My interest in helping delinquent youths led naturally into a graduate program in counseling.
I received a Masters in Educational Psychology, with an emphasis in Counseling. I am a National Board Certified Counselor, and have my own coaching practice. I also get to exercise my "teaching chops" as an Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Composition at a local college.
With a professional background in teaching and counseling, I am able to utilize skills from both in working with coaching students looking for academic skills and positive change. I help students develop goal-based action plans, and employ principles such self acceptance, social and community interest, cognitive-behavior change, and encouragement to help students overcome personal obstacles which keep them blocked or stuck.
I believe that by identifying what motivates us, and understanding how we strive for importance and acceptance in our lives (as well as how we cope with perceived lack of it) we can better identify ways to encourage change in ourselves and others, and stay motivated in our journey and find happiness.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
