About Rachel

I have been working in education for over 10 years. I love learning and love helping others learn. I have worked as a health educator both over seas (West Africa and Central America) and in The United States.

I have managed a tutoring center where we helped students with study skills and with subject based curriculum as well. I have been a substitute teacher in K-12 and have taught basic skills math up to algebra to students with learning disabilities and math phobias. I have been a teacher's aide to to a University professor for over 6 years. I have taught English as a Second Language in Colombia and in the United States.

We all learn just a little bit differently. My goal is to find the best way for YOU to learn what you need to learn. I am patient and dedicated. I will be there with you every step of the way. I make my classes fun and engaging, often incorporating music, videos and games. I will work with your textbooks but I will also search out other interesting and helpful materials to help emphasize and augment what we are studying.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I earned my CELTA certification from the International House in Bogota, Colombia. I have taught English both overseas and in the U.S. I make my classes highly interactive and very fun.

Grammar

As both a learner of languages and as an ESL Teacher I know and understand the importance of grammar. For many people including myself, having an understanding of the grammatical rules of a language gives you a deeper understanding of its usage.

IELTS

I have my CELTA certification and have spent time teaching ESL both over seas and in The US. I have tutored students in the past in IELTS as well as in The Michigan Test. I use both the official practice tests and my own curriculum to help students prepare for these exams.

Proofreading

I have been a teacher's aide for seven years. The bulk of my work includes correcting papers. I see so many students who rely on spell check alone to "proofread" their papers. This is not enough. I have a critical eye and an excellent knowledge of English grammar. I can help you make your papers sound more polished and give you feed back to improve future papers.

Study Skills

When I was manager of a private tutoring center, in addition to specific subjects I worked with my students on their study skills. I also worked with students with learning disabilities at a community college and taught them how to "study smarter not harder". We all learn in different ways so it is important to identify how a student learns and then create a study plan just for them.

TOEFL

I have my CELTA certification from The International House in Bogota, Colombia. I have taught English as a Second Language both over seas and in The States. I have helped students prepare for the TOEFL.
