I taught students at the San Francisco Unified school District for over 25 years. During this time I mainly worked with third, fourth and fifth grade classes. A great deal of my experience is in teaching Reading, Language, Writing, Social Studies (K-8) and Math. I prepared fourth graders for the California Writing Test. Additionally, I taught all subjects (including French) to fourth and fifth graders in Vancouver, British Columbia, and children with special needs (all grade levels) in Manila and Nairobi.
I hold several California credentials. The one required for teaching K-8 level students is the Standard Elementary Credential, which I hold for life. I also possess Resource Specialist and Educational Therapist certificates. My undergraduate degree is in Psychology, and post-graduate in education of exceptional children. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked on test preparation for California Standards and Common Core with third, fourth and fifth graders for several years. The students always scored high.
I am a retired teacher from the San Francisco Unified School District. My elementary credential and resource specialist certificate qualify me to teach K-8. My experience is chiefly in grades 2-5 with an emphasis on 4/5. Additionally, I taught in British Columbia, the Philippines, and Kenya. In Kenya I taught study skills to high school students.

I taught cursive handwriting to third and fourth graders for 20 years in San Francisco.
I used phonics in teaching spelling and reading to 2nd graders for two years, and to a lesser extent to 3rd graders during a 14 year period at George Peabody School in San Francisco.
In working with third, fourth and fifth graders, I taught students to prepare for tests and to write reports. This involved a process of planning, organizing and executing. I used similar strategies in working with middle school students in Kenya.
