Bio

I am a native Californian, born in Los Angeles. My family moved to San Francisco where I received my K - 12 education. I received a more formal and self-directed education at Cal State, East Bay, Hayward (CSUH) and San Francisco Law School (SFLS), earning a B.S and M.P.A. at CSUH and J.D at SFLS.

I'm a late bloomer in terms of pursuing my educational goals, as I did not even start college until I was an adult with children. This is good, in a way, because it demonstrates/sets a good and motivating example that it's never too late to go back to school. However, on the other hand, I also recognize how much easier and less costly (for me) if I'd gone to school when I was still at home and my mom had paid for it! Still, as a more mature adult, I presented a balance to the classroom and a level of discipline and expertise that both instructors and students found beneficial.

I love math. I find math to be an "objective" study, though arriving at the solution can take several routes to get there. I teach that math also has its own language. I frequently find that students do not know how to "translate" math into words that they can comprehend (break down into "usable/understandable" pieces). Students are better equipped if they can "see" the connection between words and numbers.

My approach is to begin with determining how well a student is with fractions, as I consider this area to be the "foundation" for Algebra, Statistics, Probability, etc..

I offer a "no pressure" and nurturing "you can do this" environment. Together, students and I will determine what best works for both of us. I encourage students to use/develop sound critical thinking skills, focusing on the "Why do you think that is?" question. Developing this attribute is not limited to understand math, but will prove to be very useful in navigating the many "roads" (i.e. benefits/consequences in making choices) life presents on a daily basis.

I very much look forwarding to working with parents and students. I can assure you a good "fit," so contact me as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Venetta C.

Handwriting,

Handwriting

I have much experience in this area. I begin by showing students the correct manner to print all letters (both upper and lower case) of the alphabet, Next, I first show students the difference between handwriting modes (cursive and printing) of each alphabet. My next step is to advise students that when writing in cursive is to "never let pencil leave paper."
Study Skills,

Study Skills

As a law school student, I learned to employ many study skills' strategies (whether I studied alone or in a study group). In either case, the min thing is to get organized (including finding an area where the student is not distracted and comfortable - including not being hungry and/or tired)

Writing,

Writing

My approach is to help my students enhance their vocabulary as well as learn parts of speech and to recognize and avoid some of the common "no-nos" I have "experienced" during my teaching career. I attempt to not only make the subject practical, but also to encourage students develop a "what's in it for me?" attitude. In addition to home-schooling my 8th-grader granddaughter, I also wrote, edited and self-published a book. Thanks for your consideration, Ms Venetta

Test Preparation

CBEST,

CBEST

I passed the CBEST at first attempt, though many teachers told me it was very difficult. I did not find this to be true. I am qualified to teach math and basic English skills. I ran several California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) "Boot Camps,' as well as having taught this class. Passing the CAHSEE requires that students be proficient in 8th grade math and 10th grade English, as without a passing score, students will not receive a high school diploma. I have also taught GED materials and test-taking strategies. Additionally, I've written and published a book and am published in my law school's Law School's Law School Review.

Knowledgeable and very sweet!

First lesson with Ms. Vanetta. My daughter loves her. She was very patient with my daughter and explained how reading comprehension works. She brought a workbook with her as well to help my daughter. I'm blessed that I was able to find a tutor like her to help with reading and math!!
