About Paula Joy

Acquiring solid writing skills gives you an impressive edge in this competitive world. If you need help understanding English grammar and its proper usage, I have excellent credentials and experience to bring to the effort! I make learning how to write more clearly and concisely an enjoyable process. Using down-to-earth examples, humor, and imagination, I simplify the rules and mechanics of writing.

I tutor senior high school students, college students, and working adults. In my teaching method, we review written material together, sentence by sentence. We can review your written material or I can provide writing exercises. We identify the structure of sentences, the patterns that occur in that structure, and what grammar rules best apply.

My expertise with the written word developed through the process of transcribing and proofreading thousands of pages of testimony. I was held to a very high standard of accuracy, working for 12 years as a Certified Shorthand Reporter.

I also taught court reporting locally for five years, during which time I earned the NCRA designation of Certified Court Reporting Instructor. In my classes, I reviewed the finer points of grammar in great detail every day. My students often told me that I explained grammar in a way that made that challenging subject much less confusing.

As far back as I can remember, I have appreciated literature. I attended Occidental College in Los Angeles for three years, majoring in Comparative Literature. At local colleges, I have also completed several courses in creative writing, writing for magazines, and editing. I earned an A.S. in Photography from City College of San Francisco, as well.

I request notice of 16 hours if a session needs to be canceled.

Here is a testimonial from one of my students:
Paula is one of the few teachers I have had in my lifetime whose presence and positive energy shined brightly. The rules of English grammar and punctuation were reviewed daily in thorough detail. I saw Paula transform students who never got it before, and they left her instruction forever changed. (Malinda R., Sacramento, CA)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have had to apply the finer points of grammar professionally for many years, as a Certified Shorthand Reporter. I have literally transcribed and proofread tens of thousands of pages. Words are my "bread and butter," one might say! I also have five years of experience teaching in this subject area, so I'm comfortable with questions!

Grammar

I have 5 years of experience at a local career college, teaching adult learners preparing to to take the California court reporter certification exam. My classes included daily review of English grammar and usage, vocabulary, writing mechanics, and proofreading skills. I have 12 years of experience as a Certified Shorthand Reporter, which required that I edit and proofread tens of thousands of pages of transcripts. I enjoy helping others to gain confidence in their writing skills!

Literature

I have been a prolific reader all my life, in awe of the power and beauty of the written word. I've taken creative writing classes, and I have written several articles on a variety of subjects, published locally. At Occidental College, I earned 80 units of credit, majoring in Comparative Literature, minoring in French.

Proofreading

As a Certified Shorthand Reporter for 12 years, my reputation and ongoing employment depended upon being an excellent proofreader, held to very high professional standards. I've edited tens of thousands of pages of transcripts over the years. I maintain my professional license as a Certified Shorthand Reporter, and I also have five years of teaching experience that included daily review of the finer points of English grammar and usage with my students.

Vocabulary

Through my college studies in Comparative Literature and 12 years of experience working as a Certified Shorthand Reporter, I have always worked with words. I respect their power. I've had several people, including my son, tell me that I have one of the best vocabularies of anyone they know. I believe this is because I have always been an avid reader, so I've always paid attention to words. I look at words with humility and curiosity, and I enjoy looking up words whenever encountering new ones. I love to know the etymology behind words.
