As a recently retired linguistics professor whose love of language and teaching never retires, I seek to continue to share my knowledge with those who wish to enhance their language skills (verbal or written). As a result, I hope to cultivate a desire to learn as well as to expand one's cultural awareness.
Within my field, I specialize in Teaching Methodology, Grammar, and Phonetics (Articulation Perfecting and Accent Reduction). Although I have practical and academic experience in 5 languages (see List of Qualified Subjects), my area of expertise is in English and French.
My approach to teaching is a very interpersonal one, as it is crucial to recognize that as individuals, each of us has a preferred method of learning that is most effective for our individual learning styles. A key component of my Teaching Philosophy is that when one is not enjoying the learning process, then one cannot effectively receive and process the input in a way that will result in successful retention of the information. My approach is therefore, not just interpersonal, but also "personable" and "student-specific". When learning is enjoyable (and even FUN), we are not only motivated to learn, but we also find the learning experience to be "burden free", and sometimes, "effortless".
My methodical approach to teaching coupled with my patient and personal touch, leads to successful learning among students. I have been honored as a recipient of several institutional and national awards in Teaching Excellence, as well as a place in "Who's Who in America among Post-Secondary Teachers". My teaching experience is not, however, limited to the post-secondary/college level and adult learners. I have also taught English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Mathematics at the Elementary and Junior High School levels both in Japan and in the U.S. Observing and experiencing the progress, growth, development, and achievements of my students over the past 20+ years have been the most meaningful and priceless rewards that I have or could have ever received.

Rates negotiable based on: Subject/Prep Time (one-on-one: $40-$75); Length/Duration/Frequency of Lessons (i.e., reduced rates for long-term); Multiple Student Discounts (e.g., 3-5 students: $20-$40).
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students.
