I am a graduate of Syracuse University where I majored in English Literature and Composition and minored in Journalism. I received a Master's Degree in English from California State University, Sonoma. I have taught English reading and writing at college and junior college levels for 8 years and hold a Lifetime Credential. Through the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance I tutored at the junior high and high school levels for 6 years with an emphasis on English as a Second Language. For two years I tutored through the Sonoma County Library Literacy Program and worked one-on-one with students needing help related to their specific employment.

I have developed lesson plans that will help students develop skills for writing clearly and descriptively and will give them a method for critically thinking about subject matter. I have often helped students develop their English communication skills by focusing on the personal interests or the career objectives they have.

At the college level, I motivated students to appreciate and understand literature on a personal level and to communicate clearly their observations and ideas. On a high school level, I helped students pass the testing required for graduation and to complete their senior projects. My strength is to relate to the student's individual background and interests and from that develop a plan that will be not only instructive but also engaging to the student.

My conviction from my teaching and tutoring experience is that the best learning crucible is one in which the student can relate to the lesson. I spend a significant amount of time outside the one-to-one tutoring adapting lesson plan from the student interests whether they be music, texting, socializing, television programming, comics, sports etc. I do this with the understanding that the student will ultimately have to face the scrutiny of teachers and employers.

My practical life experience has enabled me to relate to others and enter their world. As a writer for newspapers and magazines I learned how to interview people and understand their unique qualities. As a business owner and manager of sales staffs I was able to motivate individuals according to their specific goals and help them develop their abilities to the maximum potential. These practical experiences not only make for an engaging give-and-take with students but give me a practical knowledge that will not only inspire their imagination but will also make them aware of the competition or requirements they face in the academic and commercial worlds.

Public Speaking

I have been a member of Toastmasters International for 3 full years. I have completed 25 prepared speeches and many more impromptu speeches. At many of the meetings I have been the MC and have been responsible for the conduct of members, procedure of the meetings and promptness of the beginning and ending of the meetings. I have worked with non-profit CEO's helping them writing and deliver their speeches. Along with this, I have given eulogies at memorial services and keynote speeches at weddings, anniversary and birthday speeches. My career as a teacher for 8 years gave me the opportunity to speech or groups of people on many different occasions with many different topics. Specifically, last year I consulted with a colleague at work with the procedure and keynote speeches for a wedding. I helped the person select the various parts of the public presentation, helped him write those parts and his keynote speech and aided him with the appropriate presentation and delivery. I have spoken to the Rotary, Santa Rosa Breakfast Club, and to various cultural organizations regarding the history and culture of the region.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESOL in community college and in literacy programs. I build the lessons to fit the individual student with a strong focus on grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. I assign individualized homework assignments; during the lessons, I note the specific words, phrases and structure that need to be addressed and review them. The lessons include dialog and reading. I have worked with Wyzant ESOL students from many backgrounds including Japanese, Indian, Russian and Spanish.
Grammar,

Grammar

I teach a form of grammar that helps students bring more details and description to their writing through the use of clauses and phrases. By building simple sentences into complex sentences through the use of conjunctions, the student learns how to use language more precisely and how to include cause and effect. Applied grammar helps a student write with examples, sensory detail and concepts.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

Completed my own thesis for Master's Degree in Literature. I have worked with undergraduate and graduate students on their written projects and essays from 2-pages to 20-page semester research papers. I have worked with creative writers not only as a proof-reader but also as an editor. I have helped them add descriptive and conceptual detail, focus narrative, and expand dialogues.

I am currently working with a 5th grade WyzAnt student as tutor and his attention, reading, and writing are improving. I tutored for 5 years through the Mentor Alliance in Sonoma, and was a parent assistant in the grammar school classes of two of my own children. Most of my reading, writing and organizing skills can be transferred to grammar school students. I studied Transformational Grammar as an undergraduate which is helpful in teaching young students how to write sentences. As a graduate student in linguistic classes I studied the works of Piaget and Vygotsky which included the study of how children learn and use language. My background in grammar, vocabulary, and composition would be useful for young students to help them organize and articulate their own thoughts.

Great tutor!

Vince is a great tutor. He is very knowledgeable and put me at ease. In our first session he was very interested in what I wanted to improve on and what my goals are. I highly recommend him.

Adam, 3 lessons with Vincent

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Vincent is so informative, and takes his time to ensure you understand the material. His contributions to my studies and learning is invaluable. I have been working with Vince for a few semesters now, and I wish I had worked with him sooner.

Renato, 106 lessons with Vincent

Very good with my reluctant daughter

My daughter is making progress in her language arts assignments. She is doing well with Vincent's patient and encouraging tutoring.

Cynthia, 18 lessons with Vincent

Great tutor

Vincent really cares about the students success. He is always going the extra mile to help a student excel in their subject

Steaffani, 19 lessons with Vincent

He works hard at benefiting his students.

Vincent spends lot of time and effort to tailor his teaching to my son. The teaching materials evolve to foster my son's writing skills. I can appreciate my son's progress in the way he organizes his thoughts in speaking and writing. I like it when Vincent helps my son develop the love for language through learning poems, idioms, and word morphology. My son requests to see him often since "he makes me think".

Oanh, 63 lessons with Vincent

Very patient and excellent tutor

Vincent is a gem and my son's reading and writing has greatly improved since working with Vince. Most importantly his comprehension has improved. When he started working with my son he was reading at a 2nd grade level and now he can read his 4th grade school books with minor assistance. I highly recommend Vince.

Janine, 75 lessons with Vincent

Great tutor.

Vincent was able to help my son develop strategies to answer quiz essays. My son had a very narrow focus on how to answer the question, and Vincent helped broaden his understanding of what might be expected in the essay. My son and he have developed a good rapport.
