About Elliot

Hi, my name is Elliot, I currently teach yoga and am looking for some part time work tutoring and teaching. I have my bachelor's degree as of three years ago and moved to Boston for two years to begin my career. After leaving my job, I recently returned to Sacramento to teach yoga and begin exploring the field of education. I attended private schools for my entire life and Jesuit high school in Carmichael, as well as Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington. When I was in middle school, I was diagnosed with ADD and prescribed Ritalin, which stayed with me for about twelve years, until college. It was during my time at Gonzaga University and in Paris that I was able to shed all medication. I have done significant amounts of research on the "disorder" and am perfectly comfortable discussing my own experiences, as well as assisting and tutoring children who are diagnosed and medicated for ADD and/or ADHD.

In 2007 I received my Bachelor's degree in French literature and language. I studied for a year in Paris and obtained fluency and am well versed in French history, philosophy, phonetics (pronunciation) and culture. I am particularly skilled with familiar spoken French, and can assist with anyone who is considering spending time abroad. I am extremely familiar with the city of Paris, notably the metro system, the history, and the organization of the city. This will allow me to assist you in learning the language to any extent necessary. I also very much enjoy French culture, so I have various recommendations for films and reading that will allow anyone to pursue their passion for the language and culture.

I am excellent with simplifying grammatical rules and making the language learnable. I have tutored two students at the college level and am very confident in my ability to make the French language simple for anyone to comprehend. I have taken 7 years of French and can assist anyone who is looking to excel in the language through my communication skills. My experience has taught me that time and practice allow for progress, as well as exposure to the nuances of the language. French is extremely complex and can be daunted to anyone who has not been exposed to the language outside of the US. My experience will allow you to feel comfortable in the more complex linguistic situations and I can easily simplify the complexities of the language that may seem unreachable to students.

I believe that language learning should be gamified and conceptual with large amounts of discussion. I believe strongly in role playing, word association, practical verb conjugation, phonetic exercises involving potentially real situations, and lessons that are hands on. French is a language that requires a lot of work, so as a tutor I will try to make the work as meaningful and fun to learn as possible. The French culture can be extremely interesting and fun if given the right perspectives and the proper efforts to understand why their culture is different from our own. The language itself is a language of nuances and perfectionism, which can be a very rewarding challenge that I look forward to accomplishing with anyone that I am blessed to assist with the language. I bring hands on techniques, resources from a wide variety of sources and with differing difficulty levels to suit whatever the child may be struggling with.

Overall, I am very familiar with the language in both familiar and formal circumstance and love assisting people with their goals in linguistics. I can also advise on future possibilities with knowledge and fluency in the language and on possibilities for travel, studying, or teaching abroad. My cultural experience will give you a wide breadth of understanding of the French culture and allow for increased performance in school settings.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
