About Chris

Hi, I'm Chris. I'm a student working toward a Single Subject and Multiple Subject teaching credential. I have passed the California Subject Examination for Teachers in English. I am experienced in tutoring English (Reading and Writing) to students K-12, and in tutoring Math for K-8. I am a substitute teacher for an independent study school where I work in a small group and one-on-one setting with students. Before I started working in education I received my B.A. in Broadcast Electronic Communications from San Francisco State University (2007).

My teaching style is very much centered around the understanding that people think, learn, and study differently. I am very capable of tailoring my instruction to the needs of the student. This is largely what drove me to the independent study instructional environment where I work now; I prefer this over teaching a class of thirty students who have different best methods of learning. My passion is in seeing my students make breakthroughs in their learning, and tutoring allows me to do that.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I have been a passionate basketball player since I was eleven years old. I consider myself a student of the game, and therefore qualified to teach it to others. I was never the best basketball player in school, but I understand the nuances of the game and can help a player develop in the necessary skills based on whatever position he or she plays. I am mentoring a young teenager now and have worked with him to improve his basketball skills.

CBEST

I have passed the CBEST as required for my Substitute Teaching Permit. The CBEST was a very easy exam for me as compared to the CSET; it is essentially a high school equivalency exam, and since I have graduated high school, received a Bachelor's degree, and am working toward my teaching credential (in addition to already passing the CBEST), I feel highly qualified to tutor in the CBEST.

Public Speaking

I have taken many public speaking courses and in high school and college I participated in school plays. When I was in high school, my public speaking teacher told me he wished he had my natural speaking ability. I have always been very comfortable speaking in front of an audience. I now practice public speaking as a substitute teacher.

Writing

I have substantial professional writing experience, including business proposals, commercial copy, business newsletters, research papers and essays. I would be happy to share samples of some of my work upon request.
