Proficiency is achieved through work. Unfortunately there are no short cuts. You will learn faster or slower than your peers; you will struggle more or less; you will achieve varying degrees of relative success. But goals of math proficiency will be largely determined by your desire to learn and your ability to work towards those goals.
If you have a desire and are willing to work, I can bring my mathematics, teaching, and 48 years of life experience to bear on your process of working towards your math proficiency goals. Looking to make it through an exam? an achievement milestone? a college or trade school entrance requirement? or, perhaps just to make sense out of your current course-work.
My methods will focus you on mastering mathematical fundamentals and a critical perspective that is invaluable in seeing beyond the black and white of “getting the right answer”. Through mastery of fundamentals, focused work, and a broader perspective, you can achieve real understanding and lasting competence in mathematics and its applications to the world we live in. Regardless of your current proficiency level (or lack thereof), I can help you to achieve your mathematical proficiency goals.
I am friendly, personable, and believe that all people are equally deserving of opportunities to succeed. I also appreciate the value of diligence and competence in any student’s learning process - a process leading to greater proficiency and personal confidence.

I am a UC Davis Graduate - B.S. Mathematics with extensive experience working in civil engineering and building fields and teaching high school math. I am qualified and available to tutor Math, English, Probability, and Statistics.
In addition to concepts in the Physical Sciences, problem solving, and test preparation, I am especially skilled at seeing context and making connections for students who are looking for real-world application of diverse subject areas.
On the verbal side, I am a native English speaker with extensive experience in written communications in educational, professional, and social contexts. I can help you to appreciate and understand the fundamentals and vast subtleties of English and can help you apply them whatever your communication needs.
My education consists of: B.S. Mathematics, UC Davis 1993, Graduate Studies in Education, SFSU 1999-2000.
Continuing Education: Various subjects at the local community college.
I live in Sacramento and will travel throughout the Greater Sacramento area for tutoring sessions. I will meet students at their preferred location (home or public place), and I am available to see adult students at my home in the Arden-Arcade district.
REGARDING MY WEEKLY SCHEDULE
To maximize my availability for younger students, I have three two hour appointment windows M-F: 3-5, 5-7, & 7-9. This allows for 75-90' (chargeable) session time, leeway for +/- start time, and time for me to get to my next appt. Also, I am busy enough that I restrict my (geographic) areas by day of week (which changes from time to time).
Thank you for your time and interest.

In efforts to preserve my GPA, I previously withdrew, twice, from Statistics for Social Sciences due to failing grades. I found WyzAnt and Duncan. With Duncan’s tutoring, I went from two failed attempts to a strong A with a 96% and preservation of my overall GPA.
I am now working with Duncan in the next level of statistics, Statistics for Psychology. I received an A, 93%, for my first homework packet and have the confidence I will close this academic degree with another A, due to Duncan’s soft skills and dedication. He possesses the ability to meet his students in their own communication style that helps them reach understanding. Duncan also possesses the skill of observation, allowing him to pinpoint areas where you are weak to assist in understanding and excelling process.
Duncan is also flexible with scheduling with proper notice, and is very easy to work with. His rates are realistic and reasonable for most, to include college students on their own. I highly recommend Duncan as a great tutor who will assist you in going far in your pursuit of higher education.
Duncan was able to figure out what our son needed in short order and put together a plan that worked to perfection with a quick turnaround of 3 weeks. Lifesaver!
My fist impression of Duncan is that he is intuitively versed in and knows a great deal about mathematics. He has been very helpful in the instruction of my son as he continues to gain a greater sense of Geometry. My son and I are happy to report that he has given some keen insight into how to approach Geometry and helped him to master some of the more difficult concepts when it comes to proofs. We will continue with this tutor and we as excited to see how much further he can push our son.
Duncan is exceptional with his work. As unenthusiastic when it comes to math with my son, Duncan can make it more workable for Him is a tremendous feat. I would not hesitate to recommend Duncan to anyone.
Duncan was very thorough in determining what we were looking for in a tutor - someone to introduce the concepts of calculus prior to taking CalcAB this fall. I particularly appreciated that he asked if my son was "on board" with summer tutoring. In the initial session, he evaluated the current level of my son's math skills, introduced him to new concepts, and helped set some goals. They met once a week during the summer to review the assignment for the previous week, clarify any issues, and move on to new material when deemed appropriate. Although my son hasn't mastered Calculus, he is familiar with the concepts and will enter his class in the fall with confidence. This is exactly what we had hoped for, and Duncan achieved this goal with patience, enthusiasm, and some useful practical advice. Expectations met! Thank you Duncan.
Duncan is a great math tutor. I am studying for the GRE and he broke down the math problems in an easy way that I could understand.
Since my son started working with Duncan, he finally gets the concept of math. Duncan is wonderful in every way. He has also become a mentor to my son in other subjects. My son is actually learning how to study with Duncan's guidance. He has slowed down and his work is organized for the first time. Duncan is a treasure.
I have been tutored by Duncan for a few months now and he has been a great help to me in my college algebra class that I've been taking. He always goes at my own pace and helps me to understand the concepts that I'm having trouble with. He's always able to meet me near my home and is available to meet with me weekly or more often if I need extra help that week. I would recommend Duncan for any math student who wants an approachable, knowledgeable tutor to help them with their math work.
Duncan is a lifesaver. My daughter had given up in her trigonometry class. It's been 30+ years since I've taken any type of math and was never good at it. My daughter's grade was an F. She now has a solid B and has confidence. I would highly recommend Duncan to anyone who has a struggling math student. He was recommended to me by a parent. I am so happy that he was able to help my daughter.
Duncan is doing great helping my daughter. He has helped her understand some of the lessons and the material that she didn't understand. She re-took a test and said she felt really good about the material. Thank you, Duncan.
Duncan was able to get my son to engage in learning high school algebra without spoon feeding him the answers. My son learned during every lesson and was able to apply the material into his classroom assignments. His understanding improved as well as his grades.
Duncan has a way to keep our son's attention to what is being explained. He knows the subject matter. He is also good at dealing with teenagers, he relates to them in a way that makes math not seem a threat to them.
Duncan was very on top of things! He made a huge effort to look over my lab homework prior to our meeting as well as pointing me in the right direction to get additional on-line assistance. If he were unsure of a concept (because this was biostatistics), he admitted that he was unsure and proceeded to look into my book further until it came together. The concepts were explained clearly and I think he will be extremely helpful in guiding me through this difficult course.
His patience, friendly demeanor, and energy were fantastic!
Duncan is great. He listens and thinks very quickly, responding to the situation with agility. My daughter is a great deflector, but he doesn't let her get away with any shenanigans. For instance, after going over Geometry proofs he asked, "Do you get it?" and she said, "Yeah." Most tutors at this point are drawn into her complacency by her smile, but Duncan challenged her to prove that understands the concept by working a problem on her own. I am impressed by anyone who can see past the facade of understanding she props up.
Duncan was great. He was patient and made learning much easier. He explains things in a way that helped me understand. I think the homework helped as we would go over it and this would help both of us figure out where I needed the most help. I would recommend for sure.
Our son has improved significantly thanks to his work with Duncan. We find Duncan to be very effective and flexible. We highly recommend him.
Excellent Tutor. He reviews the material & prepares for each session. My college daughter's grade has improved greatly! And now she can move on herself as she understands the statistics course. Thank you Duncan!
My son Michael and I would like to thank Duncan M. for his help in preparing Michael to take the ASVAB test. Duncan had a great rapport with Michael and was there for him to answer any question while doing homework. Michael received a high enough score to join the Army and we thank Duncan for his time and effort to make Michael's dream come true. He couldn't have done it without Duncan and we would recommend him to anyone.
We had Duncan work with both of our high school kids in math, as they were struggling. He was very patient, organized, and diligent in covering the material needed to help them pass the class. Both kids worked well with him. We will be contacting Duncan in the fall when school resumes to help keep them up to date on math going forward.
Duncan helped our son prepare for a entrance math exam for the WECA Electrical apprentice program which he passed with flying colors. We couldn't have done it without Duncan. Thank you Sir!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am well versed in the fundamentals of Statistics and research methods involving, Study Design, ANOVA, and Linear Regression. I learned these skills through upper division study in my career at UC Davis, and by tutoring several students in upper-division and master's level Stat courses.
I took the CBEST in 1997 as part of my Secondary Education Teaching Credential program. I passed the test and went on to enroll in a master's program in Secondary Education at SFSU. I then taught HS math with a California CTC Emergency Credential. I have recently reinstated my credential for substitute teaching in CA.
The exam is fairly straightforward; it is (+/-) comparable to the SAT.

No sub-discipline of mathematics seems to strike more fear into students than Statistics - NORMALCY, HYPOTHESIS TESTING, AND DISPERSION! oh my.
FEAR NOT! Fundamental Statistics, Introduction to Statistics, Elementary Statistics are all names for a first course in Probability and Statistics. This course is often taken as a lower division or, perhaps, a widely offered upper division college course. It may even be offered as an Advanced Placement course in high school.
Whatever the course name, a comprehensive intro to Stat class will cover the same basic principles - in basically the same order! It's a tough class for sure; but not because the concepts are unwieldy. It's tough because it's new, and with some perseverance and an open mind you can be stat proficient!
Descriptive Stat, Probability, Counting, Probability Distributions, Sampling, Inference, Hypothesis Testing, ANOVA, Linear Regression, etc. It all makes sense! (really).
