Hi! My name is Vicky, and I recently graduated from Occidental College with a B.A. in English Comparative Literary Studies and a Religious studies minor. I have been a writing tutor for the school for 3 years now, and I absolutely love my job! My favorite thing about being a writing tutor is the fact that I can interact with people and learn about whatever subject they are writing about, including international relations, science, music, literary studies, etc. As part of my tutoring job with Oxy, the Center for Academic Excellence also provided us with a class where we learned about and discussed various teaching pedagogies. I have also previously taught algebra at an after school, and enjoy teaching in general.
In terms of music, I have been playing piano for about 7 years now, and led worship for my fellowship at school. My music theory background is fairly strong, and it is always my pleasure to explain concepts in understandable ways to people who truly desire to learn.
As for the sciences, I took up to Organic Chem II and worked for a year in a lab experimenting with phospholipid bilayers and interdigitated states. I was blessed enough to work with the associate dean of the college and also earned a Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant.
Overall, I have always believed in an interdisciplinary approach to learning any subject, and am excited at the prospect of continuing to tutor :) Hi! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have led Bible study in my fellowship in college for the past year, and have been through Mark, Genesis and Jonah study in InterVarsity. I have also served on ministry team with InterVarsity, and have been through training on how to teach and lead a God investigation group (GIG) for seekers who want to know more about the Bible. It helps that I am also an English major; I have taken classes on the Bible, including Bible as Literature and New Testament Apocrypha.
I have taken and passed the CBEST in one session.
