Cal Poly Pomona (Philosophy)
I am a college graduate who studied philosophy and have taken upon independent writing tasks outside of the academic sphere. If you are an upperclassman in high school or a college freshman or at an equivalent level I would like to help you with your writing. Philosophy lessons should also be available, whether for a particular thinker or philosophical topic of the student's discretion.
My tutoring style is based off of honing writing skills to clarify ideas and help develop a student's own voice as a writer. My method will vary based off the individual, but will most likely consist of feedback on writing samples and free response activities to help students think outside the box. Extra reading may be suggested if the student seems interested or extra writing may be required if needed.
The purpose for me as a tutor is to help you to become a better critical thinker, to reason better, and become more culturally diverse. These are valuable skills that can translate into writing well. Accordingly, plans of engagement to get a you to think outside the box and challenge viewpoints you hold will be drawn up and enacted for the student's benefit. A background in philosophy may prove important in laying the foundation for one's efforts as a thinker, debater, and writer.
My senior thesis considered the nature of relativism in regards to metaphysics and morality. Carol Rovane has been influential in this area and was taken into consideration in writing my paper. Other topics on which I have written for my studies include identity in metaphysics, conscious identity, and the epistemology of reality. Philosophers written on include Boethius, Sartre, Leibniz, Moore, Plato, Kierkegaard, Camus, and Nietzsche also as part of my studies in college.
If you wish to develop your skills in writing or philosophy, I would like to be of service to you. Contact me for further information and I will get back to you so we can assess the level you are at and of what service I can be. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With a bachelor's in philosophy this is my strongest subject. I am well read and have a knack for insight and creativity. Reason and critical thinking are the keys to unlocking great minds and unlocking your world. If you would like to learn about this subject I would be happy to give lessons on topics from Nietzsche, to epistemology, to the philosophy of the Middle Ages.
My interest in psycholgy has mostly been from outside of the lesson halls. If you would like a session or two to get a different perspective I may be able to help.
Writing is most certainly a skill; but it is not just words you put on a page. The words you use are those you use everyday and by improving your writing you improve your language. I feel my philosophy in teaching writing revolves around fluidity and word choice. So whether you just need to pass that essay or are interested in long term study, I will do my best to provide you with rewarding and enriching lessons.
