CSU, Chico (Journalism, PR)
Hi There! My name is Nellie Knapp. I grew up in Northern California where I studied journalism and public relations at California State University, Chico.
While attending college, I worked for a student-run public relations agency to gain real-world experience, worked on publications for the school of communications, and freelanced for a local newspaper.
After graduation, I moved to Sacramento and worked in the office of a U.S. Senator. I spoke and drafted correspondence on the Senator's behalf, and worked with federal agencies for California constituents.
I then moved on to the non-profit sector, working for a health care organization, where I began professionally blogging and worked extensively with the media.
I continued blogging while working for a Software as a Service company, where I also created and edited email content and presentations for events I coordinated held worldwide, and most recently was a technical writer for a brief period at Hewlett Packard.
Since starting a family, I have wanted to spend more time at home, and still be able to do what I love- help the community and write. I've been freelancing in my spare time and recently came across this site and thought it would be wonderful to tutor.
Overall, I have taken 7 years of high school and college level Spanish, including two years at AP/IB level. I have been taught Mexican, Castillian, Puerto-Rican, and Argentine ways of speaking the language. I also traveled to Spain where I spoke almost entirely in Spanish with native speakers. If you are struggling and need some confidence, please let me know. This language can be fun!
Growing up, English was always my favorite subject. I loved reading in school and learning new things from the literature that was given to us. I suppose that's why I became a journalism major- to satisfy my quest for knowledge and give it back to others. I took AP/IB English all throughout high school and was always the first one to volunteer my thoughts and opinions in class. Yes, I was the girl in the front row with her hand always raised. I've held professional tech writing jobs for Hewlett Packard, and have blogged professionally for publicly traded software companies.
I know not everyone likes school 100% of the time. We all struggle with different subjects (mine was Chemistry-oy!) and need a little guidance. As a mom myself, I understand the importance of education. If these needs are not being met at school, or require a extra time, I would love to be able to fulfill that for you. Please let me know if you have any questions. Hi There! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
